Removal (Vehicles With 2.5L Engines)

NOTE: Make sure road wheels are in straight ahead position.
  1. Centralize steering wheel and lock it in position.
  2. Remove bolt and rotate clamp plate to disconnect steering column shaft from flexible coupling. See Figure.
  3. CAUTION: When removing the floor seal do not damage the retaining clips.
  4. Release retaining clips. Disconnect upper retainer, and remove floor seal. See Figure.
  5. Remove pinch bolt, and steering column flexible coupling. See Figure.
  6. Loosen front road wheel nuts.
  7. Raise and support the vehicle.
  8. Remove front road wheels.
  9. Remove radiator splash shield. See Figure.
  10. Remove lower splash shield. See Figure.
  11. Detach bumper support brackets. See Figure.
  12. Remove secondary catalytic converter.
  13. Loosen rear support insulator center bolts. Remove rear support insulator bolt. See Figure.
  14. Loosen front support insulator maintaining nuts. Loosen front support insulator center bolt. See Figure.
  15. CAUTION: Leave the retaining nuts in place to protect the ball joint studs when detaching the tie-rod ends.
  16. Loosen tie-rod end retaining nuts.
  17. CAUTION: When the tie-rod ends are separated the ball joint seals should be protected to prevent damage.
  18. Using a Ball Joint Separator 211-001 (TOOL-3290-D), detach tie-rod ends. Remove and discard nuts. See Figure.
  19. Using a suitable transmission jack, support the front subframe assembly.
  20. Loosen the front subframe assembly retaining bolts two complete turns. Remove rear subframe assembly (2) retaining bolts. Lower front subframe assembly to gain access to power steering gear. See Figure.
  21. Detach high-pressure line clamp. See Fig 1.

  22. CAUTION: When the steering gear unions are disconnected the steering gear valve body ports should be capped to prevent dirt ingress.
  23. Disconnect high-pressure line union. Allow all fluid to drain into a suitable container. See Figure.
  24. Detach return line clamp and disconnect return line union. Remove power steering return line. See Figure.
  25. Remove power steering gear cover plate. See Fig 2.

  26. Disconnect power steering gear. See Figure.
  27. CAUTION: Make sure that the pressure check valve does not fall out of the valve body pressure port when the steering gear is being removed. See Figure.
  28. Remove power steering gear.
