Steering Gear: Installation

NOTE: If a new power steering gear assembly is being installed the unions that are supplied fitted to the power steering gear assembly should be removed and saved for future use.
  1. Push a new O-ring onto a Teflon Seal Expander, 211-D027 (D90P-3517-A) or equivalent. Position the Teflon Seal Expander, 211-D027 (D90P-3517-A) or equivalent, onto the union and install the O-ring seal. See Figure.
  2. CAUTION: Make sure the pressure check valve is installed correctly.

  3. Install pressure check valve. See Fig 1.
  4. Install power steering gear. See Figure.
  5. Connect power steering line unions to steering gear. See Figure.
  6. Attach power steering low-pressure line support bracket. See Figure.
  7. Attach power steering high pressure line support bracket. See Figure.
  8. NOTE: Install NEW retaining nuts on tie-rod ends.
  9. Connect tie-rod ends to wheel knuckles. See TIE ROD ENDS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  10. NOTE: Install a new gasket and nutson catalytic converter flange.
  11. Connect catalytic converter to center muffler. See Figure.
  12. Install lower splash shield. See Figure.
  13. Install radiator splash shield (if equipped). See Figure.
  14. Install front road wheels.Tighten wheel nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  15. CAUTION: Before lowering the vehicle make sure that the front road wheels are in the straight ahead position.
  16. Lower vehicle.
  17. WARNING: Install a NEW pinch bolt. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
  18. Install steering column shaft flexible coupling. See Figure.
  19. Install floor seal. See Figure.
  20. WARNING: Install a NEW clamp bolt. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
  21. Connect steering column shaft to flexible coupling. See Figure.
  22. Fill and bleed power steering system. See BLEEDING THE STEERING SYSTEM  under LUBRICATION.


NOTE: If a new steering gear assembly is being installed the unions that are supplied fitted to the steering gear assembly should be removed and saved for future use.
  1. Push a new O-ring onto a Teflon Seal Expander, 211-D027 (D90P-3517-A) or equivalent. Position the Teflon Seal Expander, 211-D027 (D90P-3517-A) or equivalent, onto the union and install the O-ring seal. See Figure.
  2. Install power steering gear.
  3. Install power steering gear cover plate. See Figure.
  4. Install power steering return line. See Figure.
  5. Connect power steering high-pressure line union to steering gear. See Figure.
  6. Attach power steering high-pressure clamp. See Figure.
  7. Push alignment pins through the subframe aligning holes. Engage locking pins. Using Subframe Alignment Pins, 502-002 (T94P-2100-AH), tighten the alignment pin sleeves to align the front subframe assembly. See Figure.
  8. Instal front subframe assembly retaining bolts and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . See Figure.
  9. Loosen alignment pin sleeves. Disengagelocking pins, and remove alignment pins from the subframe aligning holes. See Figure.
  10. Centralize rear support insulator and tighten the mounting bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install rear support insulator center bolt, and centralize the rear support insulator. See Figure.
  11. Centralize front support insulato and tighten the nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Tighten front support insulator (2) center bolt, and centralize the front support insulator. See Figure.
  12. Install secondary catalytic converter.
  13. Attach bumper support brackets. See Figure.
  14. NOTE: Install new retaining nuts on tie-rod ends.
  15. Install tie-rod ends to wheel knuckles. See TIE ROD ENDS .
  16. Install lower splash shields. See Figure.
  17. Install radiator splash shield. See Figure.
  18. Install front road wheels.
  19. CAUTION: Before lowering the vehicle make sure the front road wheels are in the straight ahead position.
  20. Lower vehicle.
  21. WARNING: Install a NEW pinch bolt. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
  22. Install steering column shaft flexible coupling. See Figure.
  23. Install floor seal. See Figure.
  24. WARNING: Install a NEW clamp bolt. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
  25. Install steering column shaft to flexible coupling. See Figure.
  26. Fill and bleed the power steering system. See BLEEDING THE STEERING SYSTEM  under LUBRICATION.
