Steering Gear: Notes

The power steering gear is a conventional rack and pinion type, see Figure. There are three steering gears used:

• 62.3 mm rack travel for SVT vehicles fitted with 205/55 R16 tires
• 67.8 mm rack travel for all other tires with 4-cylinder engines
• 66.3 mm rack travel for V6 engine vehicles

The steering gear is mounted on the front subframe assembly. Hydraulic fluid under pressure is supplied to the steering gear by a hydraulic pump. The pump has a remote reservoir which is attached to the strut tower at the upper right-hand corner of the engine compartment.
