Test S: Transmission Control Indicator Light Not Operating Properly

  1. Check Instrument Panel Fuse

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove and inspect fuse No. 30 (7.5-amp). If fuse is okay, reinstall and go to next step. If fuse is not okay, replace fuse. If fuse blows again, repair short to ground in Green/Black wire between central junction box and instrument interface module.
  2. Check White/Blue Wire For Open

    Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C808b. Turn ignition switch to ON position. On Contour and Mystique, measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 5 (White/Blue wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C808b. On Cougar, measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 26 (White/Blue wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C808b. If voltage is 10 volts or greater, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in White/Blue wire.
  3. Check Transmission Control Indicator Light

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove instrument cluster. Inspect instrument cluster printed circuit board. Repair or replace as necessary. Measure resistance of Transmission Control Indicator Light (TCIL) bulb. On Contour and Mystique, if continuity is present, go to next step. On Cougar, go to step  5. On all models, if continuity is not present, replace TCIL bulb. Reconnect all components and retest system.
  4. Check Black/Orange Wire For Open

    Disconnect instrument interface module harness connector C440. Measure resistance of Black/Orange wire between terminal No. 14 at instrument interface module harness connector C440 and terminal No. 2 at instrument cluster harness connector C808a. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to step  6. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Orange wire.
  5. Check White/Black Wire For Open

    Disconnect PCM harness connector C421. Measure resistance of White/Black wire between terminal No. 4 at instrument cluster harness connector C808b and terminal No. 12 at PCM harness connector C421. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in White/Black wire.
  6. Check Black/Orange Wire For Short To Power

    Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 14 (Black/Orange wire) at instrument interface module harness connector C440. If voltage is less than one volt, go to step  8. If voltage is one volt or greater, repair short to power in Black/Orange wire.
  7. Check White/Black Wire For Short To Power

    Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 12 (White/Black wire) at PCM harness connector C421. If voltage is less than one volt, go to step  9. If voltage is one volt or greater, repair short to power in White/Black wire.
  8. Check Black/Orange Wire For Short To Ground

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 14 (Black/Orange wire) at instrument interface module harness connector C440. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or greater, go to step  10. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in Black/Orange wire.
  9. Check White/Black Wire For Short To Ground

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 12 (White/Black wire) at PCM harness connector C421. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or greater, go to step  11. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in White/Black wire.
  10. Check PCM Signal

    Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 4 (White/Black wire) at instrument interface module harness connector C440, while cycling Transmission Control Switch (TCS). Resistance should switch from 62 ohms to greater than 10 k/ohms. If resistance is as specified, replace instrument interface module. If resistance is not as specified, go to step  12.
  11. Check PCM Signal

    Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 4 (White/Black wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C808a, while cycling TCS. Resistance should switch from 62 ohms to greater than 10 k/ohms. If resistance is as specified, replace instrument cluster. If resistance is not as specified,  13.
  12. Check White/Black Wire For Open

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PCM harness connector C421. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Measure resistance between breakout box test pin No. 20 and terminal No. 4 (White/Black wire) at instrument interface module harness connector C440. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to step  14. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in White/Black wire.
  13. Check White/Black Wire For Open

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PCM harness connector C421. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Measure resistance between breakout box test pin No. 12 and terminal No. 4 (White/Black wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C808a. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to step  15. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in White/Black wire.
  14. Check Circuit For Short To Power

    Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and breakout box test pin No. 20. If voltage is less than one volt, go to step  16. If voltage is one volt or greater, repair short to power in White/Black wire.
  15. Check Circuit For Short to Power

    Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and breakout box test pin No. 12. If voltage is less than one volt, go to step  17. If voltage is one volt or greater, repair short to power in White/Black wire.
  16. Check Circuit For Short To Ground

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance between ground and breakout box test pin No. 20. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or greater, replace PCM. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in White/Black wire.
  17. Check Circuit For Short To Ground

    Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance between ground and breakout box test pin No. 12. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or greater, replace PCM. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to ground in White/Black wire.
