Removal And Installation: Spring

CAUTION: Suspension fasteners are critical components because they affect performance of vital components and systems and their failure can result in major service expense. New fasteners must be installed with the same component number or an equivalent component if installation is necessary. Do not use a replacement component of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make sure of correct retention of these components. Orientation of the fasteners is also important. Make sure the fasteners are installed in the same direction as they were in when removed.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. If removing the left rear spring, lower the fuel tank to gain access to the spring shackle bolt. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
    • To install, tighten to 300 Nm (222 lb-ft).
    3. WARNING: Lower the rear axle only enough to gain access to the rear spring.

  3. Use the jack to support and lower the rear axle housing assembly.
  4. Remove the lower shock absorber bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).
  5. If removing the right rear spring, remove the muffler to gain access to the spring shackle bolt. For additional information, refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM .
    • To install, tighten to 300 Nm (222 lb-ft).
  6. Remove the rear spring shackle bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 133 Nm (98 lb-ft).
  7. Remove the 4 U-bolt nuts and the U-bolt plate.
    • Tighten in a cross pattern to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) in 3 steps.
    • Light duty: To install, tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
    • Heavy duty: To install, tighten to 250 Nm (184 lb-ft).
  8. Remove the spring and the U-bolts.
  9. On 4WD vehicles, make sure the spacer is correctly seated between the axle and spring stack, with the nose pointed inward.
  10. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
