Removal and Installation

CAUTION: Removing the steering wheel without using a puller can damage the column bearings.

CAUTION: Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .

Place the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
Remove the driver air bag module. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM .

NOTE: Do not remove the bolt until the steering wheel has been separated from the column.

Loosen the steering wheel bolt.
Using the special tool, separate the steering wheel from the steering column assembly.

Remove the steering wheel bolt and the steering wheel.
- To install, tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
