Cylinder Head: Removal

CAUTION:
During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure.
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
- Remove the lower intake manifold. For additional information, refer to LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD .
- Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner counterclockwise and remove the accessory drive belt.
- Remove the bolt and the upper idler pulley.
- Remove the 4 bolts and position the generator bracket, the generator, the accessory drive belt tensioner and the accessory drive belt idler pulley aside as an assembly.
- Remove the bolt and position the radio interference capacitor aside.
- Remove the RH exhaust manifold. For additional information, refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD - RH .
- Detach the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector retainer from the rear of the RH cylinder head. Remove the bolt and detach the ground wire.
- Remove the push rods from the RH cylinder head. For additional information, refer to PUSH ROD .
- If equipped, remove the A/C compressor. For additional information, refer to AIR CONDITIONING .
- Remove the nuts for the A/C compressor and power steering bracket brace.
- Remove the A/C compressor mounting and power steering bracket brace upper bolt. Loosen the lower bolt and position it forward until it contacts the power steering pulley. Position the A/C compressor and power steering bracket brace aside.
- Loosen the remaining bolt in the A/C compressor and power steering bracket. Position it forward until it contacts the power steering pulley and position the A/C compressor and power steering bracket aside.
- Remove the LH exhaust manifold. For additional information, refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD - LH .
- Disconnect the KS and CHT sensor electrical connectors. Detach the HO2S electrical connector retainer from the rear of the LH cylinder head.
- Remove the push rods from the LH cylinder head. For additional information, refer to PUSH ROD .
- Remove the 3 exhaust manifold lower studs.
- Remove and discard the 4 short and 4 long cylinder head bolts.
- Remove the cylinder head and the gasket. Discard the gasket.
