Pinpoint Test H: Mechanical Shift On The Fly (MSOF) Functional Test

NOTE: 4x4 high/low (4H/4L) is not intended for driving on hard/dry surfaces.
  1. H1 CHECK FOR 4x4 INDICATOR PROVE-OUT 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Do the 4x4 indicators illuminate at prove-out? 
  2. H2 CHECK 2WD OPERATION 
    • Shift the transfer case to 2H
    • Do the 4WD indicators turn OFF? 
    • Yes  : GO to  H5.
    • No  : GO to H3.
  3. H3 CHECK FOR DTCs 
    • Connect the scan tool.
    • Carry out the on-demand self test.
    • Are DTCs retrieved? 
  4. H4 CHECK FOR WIND-UP IN 2WD 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
    • Is wind-up present in turns? 
  5. H5 CHECK FOR WIND-UP IN 2WD 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
    • Is wind-up present in turns? 
    • Yes  : REPAIR the transfer case. REFER to TRANSFER CASE .
    • No  : GO to H6.
  6. H6 CHECK 4H OPERATION 
    • Shift the transfer case to 4H.
    • Does the 4H indicator illuminate correctly? 
    • Yes  : GO to  H9.
    • No  : GO to H7.
  7. H7 CHECK FOR DTCs 
    • Connect the scan tool.
    • Carry out the on-demand self test.
    • Are DTCs retrieved? 
  8. H8 CHECK FOR WIND-UP IN 4H 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
    • Is wind-up present in turns? 
  9. H9 CHECK FOR 4H STRAIGHT LINE WIND-UP 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface.
    • Is straightline wind-up present? 
  10. H10 CHECK FOR WIND-UP IN 4H 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
    • Is wind-up present in turns? 
  11. H11 CHECK 4L OPERATION 
    • Shift to 4L with the brake applied, vehicle at rest, transmission in NEUTRAL.
    • Can the shift lever be put in 4L? 
  12. H12 CHECK 4L INDICATOR 
    • Observe the instrument cluster.
    • Does the 4WD low indicator illuminate correctly? 
    • Yes  : GO to  H13.
    • No  : GO to  H14.
  13. H13 CHECK WIND-UP IN 4L 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface.
    • Is wind-up present and 4L functioning? 
    • Yes  : GO to  H17.
    • No  : GO to  H16.
  14. H14 CHECK FOR DTCs 
    • Connect the scan tool.
    • Carry out the on-demand self test.
    • Are DTCs retrieved? 
  15. H15 CHECK WIND-UP IN 4L 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
    • Is wind-up present in turns? 
  16. H16 CHECK FOR DTCs 
    • Connect the scan tool.
    • Carry out the on-demand self test.
    • Are DTCs retrieved? 
  17. H17 CHECK 4L TO 2H SHIFT 
    • Shift from 4L to 2H with the brake applied, vehicle at rest, transmission in NEUTRAL.
    • Do the 4WD indicators turn OFF? 
    • Yes  : GO to  H20.
    • No  : GO to H18.
  18. H18 CHECK FOR DTCs 
    • Connect the scan tool.
    • Carry out the on-demand self test.
    • Are DTCs retrieved? 
  19. H19 CHECK WIND-UP IN 2WD 
    • Drive the vehicle on a dry, hard surface while executing turns.
    • Is wind-up present in turns? 
  20. H20 CHECK FOR TRANSFER CASE DISENGAGEMENT 
    • Start the engine.
    • Raise and support the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
    • Rotate the rear driveshaft while observing the front driveshaft.
    • Does the front driveshaft rotate? 
    • Yes  : GO to  H22.
    • No  : GO to H21.
  21. H21 CHECK FOR LH AND RH IWE DISENGAGEMENT 
    • With the engine running, rotate the left front tire one revolution forward and one revolution backward while observing the left front halfshaft and universal joint.
    • Rotate the right front tire one revolution forward and one revolution backward while observing the right front halfshaft and universal joint.
    • Does the LH or RH front halfshaft rotate? 
  22. H22 CHECK FOR TRANSFER CASE DISENGAGEMENT 
    • Disconnect the shift lever from the transfer case. Refer to TRANSFER CASE .
    • Shift the transfer case external control lever fully clockwise into 2H.
    • Rotate the rear driveshaft while observing the front driveshaft.
    • Does the front driveshaft rotate? 
    • Yes  : REPAIR the transfer case. REFER to TRANSFER CASE .
    • No  : INSTALL a new transfer case shift lever. REFER to TRANSFER CASE . TEST the system for normal operation.
  23. H23 CHECK FOR IWE VACUUM LEAKS 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect both vacuum lines from the IWE solenoid.
    • Using a vacuum pump, apply 20 in (508 mm) Hg of vacuum to the IWE apply vacuum circuit.
    • Observe the vacuum reading.
    • Did the vacuum drop more than 25 mm (1 in) Hg per minute? 
    • Yes  : CHECK the IWE and related components for leaks. GO to PINPOINT TEST B .
    • No  : GO to H24.
  24. H24 CHECK 2H TO 4H SHIFT AT SPEED ABOVE 32 KM/H (20 MPH) 
    • Lower the vehicle and take it off of the hoist.
    • Shift the transfer case to 2H.
    • Drive the vehicle on the road and carry out a 2H to 4H shift while driving above 32 km/h (20 mph).
    • Does the transfer case shift to 4H satisfactorily? 
    • Yes  : The 4x4 system is functioning correctly.
    • No  : GO to PINPOINT TEST E .
