Removal and Installation

CAUTION: Suspension fasteners are critical parts because they affect the performance of vital components and systems and their failure can result in major service expense. A new part with the same part number must be installed if installation is necessary. Do not use a new part of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make sure of correct retention of these parts.
CAUTION: Use the hex holding feature to prevent the ball studs (upper ball joint, lower ball joint, tie-rod end and stabilizer bar links) from turning while removing and installing the nuts.
CAUTION: Do not hammer the ball studs to separate them from the wheel knuckle or stabilizer bar. Doing so can cause damage. Lightly tap the wheel knuckle or stabilizer bar to loosen the joints.
NOTE: The upper ball joint, the lower ball joint and the outer tie-rod end ball studs do not require special tools to be removed from the wheel knuckle.
  1. Remove the wheel hub and bearing. For additional information, refer to WHEEL BEARING AND WHEEL HUB .
  2. Remove the front wheel speed sensor.
    • Remove the front wheel speed sensor bolt.
    • Detach the wheel speed sensor from the hub.

  3. Remove and discard the outer tie-rod end nut.
    • To install, tighten to 150 Nm (111 lb-ft).
  4. Separate the outer tie-rod end from the wheel knuckle.
  5. Remove and discard the lower ball joint-to-wheel knuckle nut.
    • To install, tighten to 150 Nm (111 lb-ft).
  6. Separate the lower ball joint from the wheel knuckle.
  7. Remove and discard the upper ball joint-to-wheel knuckle nut.
    • To install, tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
  8. Separate the upper ball joint from the wheel knuckle.
  9. Remove the wheel knuckle from the vehicle.
    • Remove the brake shield, if necessary.
  10. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
    1. Always install new:
      • Outer tie-rod end nuts.
      • Lower ball joint-to-wheel knuckle nuts.
      • Upper ball joint-to-wheel knuckle nuts.
    2. Check the wheel alignment. For additional information, refer to SUSPENSION SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
