Crankshaft Rear Seal with Retainer Plate: Removal

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. Remove the transmission. For additional information, refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - 4R70E/4R75E .
  3. Remove the 6 flexplate bolts and the flexplate.
  4. Remove the engine rear cover plate.
  5. Using the special tools, remove and discard the crankshaft oil slinger.

  6. Using the special tools, remove and discard the crankshaft rear seal.

  7. Remove the 2 rear oil pan bolts.
  8. Remove the 6 crankshaft rear seal retainer plate bolts and the crankshaft rear seal retainer plate.
    9. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.
    NOTE: Clean the sealing surfaces with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.
  9. Clean and inspect the mating surface.
