Removal & Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mercury Villager. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Distributor overhaul procedures are not available from manufacturer. If ignition coil or CMP sensor are faulty, replace distributor as an assembly.

Ensure cylinder No. 1 is at TDC on compression stroke. Disconnect negative battery cable. Mark spark plug wires. Remove spark plug wires and distributor cap. Disconnect ignition coil harness connector and Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor harness connector. Remove distributor bolt and distributor. Ensure crankshaft is still at TDC No. 1 compression stroke. Align marks at base of distributor housing and distributor shaft. Install distributor. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
