Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Ford Pickup, 2005 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2005 Ford F450 Super Duty, and 2005 Ford Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Replace the steering gear sector shaft arm if it is bent. If the steering gear sector shaft arm is bent, check the rest of the steering linkage for damage. Replace any damaged steering linkage parts as required. Do not attempt to straighten the steering gear sector shaft arm or any other steering linkage components.

    All vehicles 

  1. Place the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.
  2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING .

    3. F250, F350, 4X4, and F450, F550 vehicles 

    NOTE: To prevent the front suspension from shifting when the track bar is removed, the front suspension must be supporting the vehicle weight.
  3. Position the jack stand under the front axle assembly.
  4. Lower the vehicle until the front suspension is supporting the vehicle weight.

    5. All vehicles 

  5. Remove the cotter pin and the drag link-to-sector shaft arm nut.
    • Discard the cotter pin.

  6. Using the special tool, separate the drag link from the sector shaft arm.

    7. F-250, F-350, 4X4, and F-450, F-550 vehicles 

  7. Remove the 2 track bar bracket-to-frame bolts.

  8. Remove the 3 track bar bracket-to-frame nuts and position the track bar aside.

    9. All vehicles 

    NOTE: The sector shaft arm nut has a dry adhesive on the threads. Do not reuse the sector shaft arm nut.

  9. Remove and discard the sector shaft arm nut.

    10. F-250 and F-350 vehicles 

  10. Using the special tool, separate the sector shaft arm from the steering gear sector shaft.

    11. F-450 and F-550 vehicles 

  11. Using the special tool and 2 grade 8 bolts, 90 mm (3.54 in), separate the sector shaft arm from the steering gear.

    12. All vehicles 

  12. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
