Removal and Installation

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING .
  2. Index-mark the driveshaft at the axle flange.

  3. Remove and discard the four driveshaft bolts. Disconnect the driveshaft from the axle flange.
    • Using mechanic's wire, support the driveshaft.

  4. NOTE: Index-mark the driveshaft to the transmission flange.
  5. Remove and discard the bolts. Disconnect the driveshaft from the transmission.
    • Using mechanic's wire, support the driveshaft.

  6. Index-mark the output shaft to the slip yoke.
  7. Remove the center bearing support bolts.

  8. Remove the driveshaft assembly.
  9. Clean grease deposits, dirt and rust from the following:
    • The driveshaft flange yoke areas.
    • All driveshaft slip yoke areas.
  10. Inspect the following:
    • The driveshaft slip yoke boot for rips or holes. Install a new boot if necessary.
    • The driveshaft center bearing support for wear or rough action. If roughness or wear is evident, install a new driveshaft center bearing support.
    • The center bearing rubber insulator for evidence of hardening, cracking or deterioration. Install a new insulator if necessary.
  11. NOTE: Lubricate the slip yoke spline with grease.
    NOTE: Install the driveshaft with the index marks made during removal.
    NOTE: Install new bolts and retainers.

  12. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
