Removal and Installation

WARNING: Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited, resulting in possible personal injury.
WARNING: Fuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure even when the engine is not running. Before repairing or disconnecting any of the fuel lines or fuel system components, the fuel system pressure must be relieved to prevent accidental spraying of fuel, causing personal injury or a fire hazard.
NOTE: The 55 gallon aft-of-axle fuel tank is shown; the 37 gallon aft-of-axle fuel tank is similar.

All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. Release the fuel pressure. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  4. Drain the fuel tank. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .

    5. NOTE: In this illustration, the vehicle body is shown removed for clarity. See Fig 2.
  5. Disconnect the fuel tank filler pipe and the filler vent tube from the fuel tank.
  6. Position the jack under the fuel tank.
  7. Remove the bolts.

  8. Remove the nuts.

  9. Remove the fuel tank support straps.
  10. Partially lower the fuel tank.

    11. Gasoline only 

  11. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) tube(s) from the fuel vapor/grade vent valve.

  12. Disconnect the fuel pressure electrical connector.

  13. Disconnect the EVAP tube from the fuel pump.

    14. All vehicles 

  14. Disconnect the fuel tube spring lock coupling. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .

  15. Disconnect the fuel pump and fuel tank sending unit electrical connector.

  16. Lower the fuel tank.
  17. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
