Section 814 (Automatic Transmission - 4R70W, 4R75W): Removal: Transmission: Removal

- Disconnect the battery. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES for E-series, or BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES -- F150 PICKUP .
- Remove the air cleaner air intake duct assembly. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING for E-series, or INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM & FILTERING SYSTEM -- F150 PICKUP .
- Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.
- Remove the engine cover. For additional information, refer to INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION for E-series, or INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION -- F150 PICKUP .
- Remove the fluid filler tube.
- Remove the bolt.
- Disconnect the electrical harness connectors.
- Remove the torque converter housing-to-engine retaining bolts. Position the fuel and electrical harness brackets aside.
- Disconnect the fluid cooler tubes. Plug all fittings and position the tubes aside.
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING for E-series, or JACKING & LIFTING - F150 PICKUP .
- Mark the driveshaft flange and the rear pinion flange for correct alignment during assembly.
- Remove the four bolts.
- Remove the driveshaft.
- Remove the shift cable and bracket.
- Disconnect the clip.
- Remove the bolts.
- Remove the access plugs.
- Remove the starter motor. For additional information, refer to STARTING SYSTEM - GASOLINE ENGINES and/or INTRODUCTION -- 6.0L DIESEL articles.
- If so equipped, remove the fasteners and the front A/C deflector assembly.
- Remove and discard the four torque converter-to-flexplate retaining nuts.
- Disconnect the catalyst monitoring sensor harness connectors.
- Remove the bolts.
- Remove the top bolt for the RH heat shield.
- Remove the bolt for the RH heat shield.
- Remove the bolt for the RH heat shield.
All applications
- Secure the high lift transmission jack to the transmission.
- Remove the crossmember.
- Remove the crossmember-to-frame retaining nuts.
- Remove the stud brackets.
- Support the transmission support crossmember.
- Remove the transmission insulator and retainer-to-crossmember retaining nuts and the transmission support crossmember.
- Remove the clamp and hanger assembly.
- Remove the bolt.
- Loosen the clamp.
- Remove the bracket and position the hanger aside.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the wire harness from the transmission.
- Disconnect the digital TR sensor electrical connector.
- Disconnect the OSS and TSS sensor electrical connectors.
- Remove the catalyst monitor connector retainer from the stud.
- Disconnect the solenoid body connector.
- Remove the flexplate inspection plate.
- Remove the bolts.
- Remove the flexplate inspection plate.
- Remove the bolt.
- Remove the bolts.
- Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
- Separate and back the transmission away from the engine, positioning the extension housing above the exhaust crossover pipe.
CAUTION: Watch for clearance between the transmission and the right side heat shield retaining bracket as well as other obstructions. - Install the special tool.
- Carefully tilt the front of the transmission downward.
- Lower the transmission enough to clear the engine. Then, carefully pull the jack with the transmission toward the front of the vehicle, lowering the transmission as required until it is clear of the exhaust crossover pipe.
- Tilt the front of the transmission upward until level.
- Remove the transmission with the jack from under the vehicle.
WARNING: The torque converter must be held firmly in its installed position.CAUTION: Watch for clearance between the transmission and the engine.CAUTION: Watch for clearance between the transmission and the exhaust crossover pipe.

The case fittings must be held in place to prevent them from moving.
NOTE:
The output shaft and driveshaft are a balanced assembly.

The nut is welded to the heat shield. Do not attempt to remove the nut.
