Removal and Installation

WARNING: Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel-related components. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and can be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

    All vehicles 

  1. Relieve the fuel pressure. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  3. Remove the engine cover. For additional information, refer to INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION . .
  4. Remove the engine air cleaner and air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING .
  5. NOTE: 4.6L shown, 5.4L similar.

  6. Disconnect the LH radio frequency interference capacitor and cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor electrical connectors.
  7. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.

  8. Disconnect the RH radio frequency interference capacitor electrical connector.

  9. Disconnect the knock sensor (KS) electrical connector.

  10. Disconnect the transmission wiring harness and the LH and RH heated oxygen (HO2S) electrical connectors.

  11. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve electrical connector.

  12. Disconnect the A/C compressor and crankshaft position (CKP) electrical connectors. Cut the tie-strap and position out the wiring.

  13. Disconnect the oil pressure switch electrical connector.

  14. 4.6L engine 

  15. Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve electrical connector.

  16. 5.4L engine 

  17. Disconnect the differential pressure feedback EGR sensor and EGR vacuum regulator solenoid electrical connectors.

  18. All vehicles 

    NOTE: The red clip must be pulled out before disconnecting the electrical connector.

  19. Disconnect the throttle position (TP) sensor electrical connector.

  21. Disconnect the electronic throttle body (TB) electrical connector.
  22. Disconnect the ignition coil and the fuel injector electrical connectors and remove the wiring harness retainers from the valve cover studs.

  24. Disconnect the fuel rail pressure (FPR) sensor electrical connector.
  25. Disconnect the electrical connectors.

  26. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the bracket.

  28. Disconnect the push pin retainers from the powertrain control module (PCM) bracket.
  29. Disconnect the two PCM electrical connectors.

  30. Disconnect the remaining fasteners and remove the fuel charging wiring harness.
  31. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
