Removal and Installation

- Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
- Remove the engine cover. For additional information, refer to INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION .
- Remove the turbocharger inlet tube. For additional information, refer to FUEL CHARGING & CONTROLS - TURBOCHARGER .
- Loosen the clamps and remove the charge air cooler pipe.
- Disconnect the oil level indicator and tube from the stator.
- Disconnect the glow plug wire retainer. Remove the nut and position the oil level indicator and tube aside.
- Disconnect the glow plug module electrical connectors.
- Position back the boot and remove the nut. Disconnect the cables.
- Disconnect the exhaust back pressure electrical connector and pushpin retainer.
- Disconnect the exhaust back pressure tube at the exhaust manifold.
- Remove the retaining nuts and glow plug module.
- Remove the three retaining nuts and the glow plug module mounting bracket.
- Remove the 11 retainers and the valve cover.
- Clean and inspect the valve cover gasket.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
All vehicles
NOTE:
If there is any oil residue, clean both connecting ports and the inside surface of the charge air cooler pipe to prevent the pipe from blowing off.
Early build vehicles
CAUTION:
Do not use power tools when removing or installing the nut.
CAUTION:
Use care not to overtighten the nut during installation.
All vehicles
NOTE:
Power stud removed for clarity.
CAUTION:
To prevent engine damage, do not use air-powered tools when installing the valve cover.
NOTE:
Mark the position of the valve cover bolts for valve cover bolt installation.
