Valve Cover - RH, 4.6L: Removal

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  2. Remove the engine air cleaner (ACL) and the air cleaner outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING .
  3. Remove the engine cover. For additional information, refer to INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION .
  4. NOTE: Rotate the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve to remove.

  5. Disconnect the hose and position it aside, then remove the PCV valve from the valve cover.
  6. Remove the clamp and oil filler tube from the valve cover.

  7. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connectors.

  8. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the bracket. Remove the retaining nut, ground strap and bracket.

  9. Remove the fuel charging wiring harness from the valve cover studs and position aside.

  10. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to clean sealing surfaces.
    NOTE: The bolts are part of the valve cover and cannot be removed.
  11. Remove the RH valve cover.
    • Fully loosen the bolts and remove the valve cover.
    • Clean the valve cover mating surface of the cylinder head with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
    • Inspect the valve cover gasket. If the gasket is damaged, remove and discard the gasket. Clean the valve cover gasket groove with soap and water or a suitable solvent.
