Valve Cover - LH: Removal

All engines

Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
Remove the engine air cleaner (ACL) and the air cleaner outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING .
Remove the engine cover. For additional information, refer to INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION .

NOTE: 4.6L engine shown; 5.4L engine similar.

Remove the crankcase ventilation tube from the valve cover.

Romeo engine (4.6L)

Remove the retaining nut for the oil level indicator and tube.

Remove the bolt and position back the oil level indicator and tube.

Remove the EGR system module tube.
- Disconnect the upper and lower fittings.
- Remove the tube.

Windsor engine (5.4L)

Disconnect the differential pressure EGR feedback sensor hose from the EGR valve tube.

Remove the EGR valve tube.
- Disconnect the upper and lower fittings.
- Remove the tube.

Remove the retaining nut for the oil level indicator and tube.

Remove the bolt and position the oil level indicator and tube.

All engines

Disconnect the LH fuel injector electrical connectors, ignition coil electrical connectors and the wire harness retainers.

Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor.

Disconnect the LH radio interference capacitor.

Position the engine control wiring harness off of the valve cover.

Disconnect the wiring harness from the power train control module (PCM) bracket.

CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to clean sealing surfaces.

NOTE: The intake manifold is removed for clarity.

NOTE: The bolts are part of the valve cover and should not be removed.

Remove the LH valve cover.
- Fully loosen the bolts and remove the valve cover.
- Clean the valve cover mating surface of the cylinder head with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
- Inspect the valve cover gasket. If the gasket is damaged, remove and discard the gasket. Clean the valve cover gasket groove with soap and water or a suitable solvent.
