In-Vehicle Repair: Camshaft: Installation

    All engines 

    CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to clean sealing surfaces.
  1. Clean the valve cover mating surface of the cylinder head with silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging.
  2. Lubricate the camshaft journals with clean engine oil.

  3. Romeo engine (4.6L) 

  4. Install the camshaft and the camshaft bearing caps in their original locations.
    • Lubricate the camshaft bearing caps with clean engine oil.
    • Position the camshaft bearing caps.
    • Install the bolts loosely.

  5. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in Fig 3.

  6. Install the camshaft sprocket.
    1. Install the sprocket.
    2. Install and tighten the bolt in two stages.
      • Stage 1: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
      • Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.

  7. Windsor engine (5.4L) 

  8. Install the camshaft and the camshaft bearing caps in their original locations.
    • Lubricate the camshaft bearing caps with clean engine oil.
    • Position the camshaft bearing caps.
    • Install the bolts loosely.

  9. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in Fig 6.

  10. All engines 

  11. Install the timing chains. For additional information, refer to TIMING DRIVE COMPONENTS - ROMEO ENGINE (4.6L)  or TIMING DRIVE COMPONENTS - WINDSOR ENGINE (5.4L) .
  12. Install the camshaft roller followers. For additional information, refer to CAMSHAFT ROLLER FOLLOWER .
