Pinpoint Test H: The Speedometer/Odometer Is Inoperative

  1. H1 CHECK THE SPEEDOMETER SIGNAL USING THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL AT 48 KM/H (30 MPH) 
    NOTE: The vehicle must be traveling at a steady speed while carrying out this test.
    NOTE: Only carry out Test Step H1 if speed limits do not allow Test Step H2 to be carried out.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Powertrain control module (PCM) PIDs.
    • Monitor the VSS PID (diesel), or OSS PID (gasoline), while driving the vehicle at 48 km/h (30 mph).
    • Does the diagnostic tool read 45 - 57 km/h (28 - 35 mph)? 
  2. H2 CHECK THE SPEEDOMETER SIGNAL USING THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL AT 97 KM/H (60 MPH) 
    NOTE: The vehicle must be traveling at a steady speed while carrying out this test.
    • Monitor the VSS PID (diesel), or OSS PID (gasoline), while driving the vehicle at 97 km/h (60 mph).
    • Does the diagnostic tool read 94 - 100 km/h (58 - 62 mph)? 
  3. H3 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
    • Check for:
      • Corrosion
      • Pushed-out pins
    • Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    • Yes  : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
    • No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST the system for normal operation.
