Pinpoint Test D: DTCS C1148, C1158, AND C1229: Testing

  1. D1 MONITOR THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR PIDS 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool:

      Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) PIDs.

    • Use the diagnostic tool to monitor the wheel speed sensor PIDs while driving the vehicle at a constant speed.
    • Are the wheel speed sensor PIDs similar? 
    • Yes  : CLEAR the DTCs. The system is operating correctly at this time.
    • No  : GO to D2
  2. D2 CHECK ALL TIRE SIZES 
    • Make sure that all tire sizes are correct and matching.
    • Are the tire sizes correct? 
    • Yes  : GO to D3.
    • No  : INSTALL a new tire of the correct size for each tire that is incorrect. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. D3 CHECK THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) CONTROL MODULE OUTPUT 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C135.
    • Measure the resistance between the ABS module C135 pins as follows:
      ABS MODULE C135 CONNECTOR SPECIFICATIONS

      Pin Circuit Pin Circuit
      5 516 (YE/BK) 13 514 (YE/RD)
      4 522 (TN/BK) 12 521 (TN/OG)
      14 523 (RD/PK) 6 519 (LG/BK)
    • Are the resistances between 800 and 1400 ohms for the front, and between 800 and 2500 ohms for the rear? 
    • Yes  : GO to D4.
    • No  : REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. D4 CHECK WHEEL SPEED SENSOR RINGS FOR DAMAGE 
    • Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to IDENTIFICATION CODES .
    • Remove the suspect wheel speed sensor.
    • CAUTION: Examine the wheel speed sensor wire carefully with a good light. Failure to verify damage in the wheel speed sensor wire at this time will lead to unnecessary component replacement and diagnostic time.
    • Inspect the wheel speed sensor rings for damaged or missing teeth. Rotate the wheel speed sensor rings to verify that all the teeth are checked.
    • Is the wheel speed sensor ring OK? 
    • Yes  : GO to D5.
    • No  : INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor ring. For the front wheel speed sensor ring, REFER to FRONT WHEEL SPEED SENSOR RING .

    For the rear wheel speed sensor ring, REFER to REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR RING . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.

  5. D5 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSORS FOR DAMAGE AND LOOSENESS 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • CAUTION: Examine the wheel speed sensor wires carefully with a good light. Failure to verify damage in the wheel speed sensor wires at this time will lead to unnecessary component replacement and diagnostic time.
    • Inspect the wheel speed sensor mounting for looseness. If the wheel speed sensor is suspected, inspect the sensor for corrosion on the rear axle housing boss, or on the front wheel speed sensor mounting flange. Clean as necessary.
    • Is the wheel speed sensor OK? 
    • Yes  : GO to D6.
    • No  : If the wheel speed sensor mounting is loose or corroded, REMOVE the wheel speed sensor, plug the opening, and thoroughly clean the mounting surfaces. If the wheel speed sensor is damaged, INSTALL a new wheel speed sensor.

    For the front sensor, REFER to FRONT WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - E-150 , or FRONT WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - E250-E450 .

    For the rear sensor, REFER to REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.

  6. D6 CHECK WHEEL SPEED SENSOR RESISTANCE 
    • Disconnect: Suspect Wheel Speed Sensor.
    • Measure the resistance between the suspect wheel speed sensor terminals.

    • Are the resistances between 2160 and 2640 ohms for the front, and between 1600 and 2300 ohms for the rear? 

    For the rear sensor, REFER to REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.

  7. D7 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR OUTPUT 
    • Disconnect: Suspect Wheel Speed Sensor.
    • NOTE: For the rear speed sensor, spinning the wheel will not turn the tone ring. You must spin the driveshaft to get accurate test results.

    • Measure the A/C voltage between the suspect wheel speed sensor pins 1 and 2, component side while spinning the front tire or the driveshaft by hand.
    • Is the wheel speed sensor output between 300 and 3,500 mVolts? 
  8. D8 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all ABS connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all ABS connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    • Yes  : INSTALL a new ABS module. REFER to ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE . TEST the system for normal operation.
    • No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.
