Axle Shaft: Removal

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  2. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to WHEELS & TIRES .
  3. Remove the differential housing cover and drain the lubricant. For additional information, refer to DIFFERENTIAL HOUSING COVER .
    4. CAUTION: Never allow the rear disc brake caliper to hang from the brake hose. Provide suitable support.
  4. Remove the brake caliper. For additional information, refer to REAR DISC BRAKE
  5. Remove the rear disc anchor plate and disc. For additional information, refer to REAR DISC BRAKE .
  6. Remove the differential pinion shaft.
    1. Remove and discard the differential pinion shaft lock bolt.
    2. Remove the differential pinion shaft.

    7. CAUTION: Do not damage the rubber O-ring in the axle shaft groove.
  7. Remove the U-washer.
    1. Push the axle shaft inward.
    2. Remove the U-washer.

    8. CAUTION: Do not damage the wheel bearing oil seal.

  8. Remove the axle shaft.
