Removal & Installation (Escape - 4WD)

  1. Ensure gearshift lever is in Neutral. Remove gearshift lever knob. Remove center console and gearshift lever boot. Disconnect the gearshift cables from gearshift lever assembly. See Fig 1. Remove cable bracket clips. See Fig 2. Slide shift cables forward and position them out of way. Remove bolts and gearshift lever assembly. See Fig 3.
  2. Remove the lower console rear trim. See Fig 4. Remove four bolts and lower console. See Fig 5. Remove the upper console trim panel pin type retainers and position the trim forward. Disconnect the cigar lighter connector.
  3. Position carpet up and remove shift cable gasket bolts. See Fig 6. Remove retaining clip from rear shift cable at transaxle shift lever. See Fig 7. Disconnect the shift cable from the transaxle shift lever. Remove the retaining clip from the front shift cable at the transaxle shift lever. Disconnect the shift cable from the transaxle shift lever.
  4. Release rear shift cable retainer by pulling on black pin and lifting the retainer free of the bracket. See Fig 8. Disconnect the rear shift cable retainer. Release front shift cable retainer by pulling on black pin and disconnect front cable retainer. Raise and support vehicle on hoist.
  5. Remove retaining bracket nuts and position the cables from the engine compartment under the car. See Fig 9. Cables will have to be positioned so that the cable retainers follow along the left subframe. Lower the vehicle. Remove the gearshift cables through the body one at a time. Use caution when removing the gearshift cables or damage to the gearshift cable retainer release pins could occur. To install gearshift cables, reverse removal procedure. Check gearshift cable adjustment. See GEARSHIFT CABLE  under ADJUSTMENTS.
