DTC P1116: Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Out of Self-Test Range

P1116 - ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) SENSOR OUT OF SELF-TEST RANGE

Description:  Indicates the ECT sensor is out of self-test range. The correct range is 0.3 to 3.7 volts.
Possible Causes: 
  • Overheating condition
  • Malfunctioning thermostat
  • Damaged ECT sensor
  • Low engine coolant
  • Damaged harness connector
Diagnostic Aids:  The ECT must be greater than 10°C (50°F) to pass the key on, engine off (KOEO) self-test and greater than 82°C (180°F) to pass the key on engine running (KOER) self-test.
Application  Key On Engine Off  Key On Engine Running  Continuous Memory 
Vehicles with only a cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor GO to DL: Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) Sensor STEP DL1. GO to DL: Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) Sensor STEP DL1. -
Vehicles with only an engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor GO to DX: Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor STEP DX1. GO to DX: Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor STEP DX1. -
Vehicles with both a CHT and an ECT sensor GO to DX: Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor STEP DX1. GO to DX: Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor STEP DX1. -
