Gearshift Lever Indicator (Cougar)

- Check that the gearshift lever indicator agrees with the transaxle operation. Parking lock, when gearshift lever is in Park position, reverse gear engaged when gearshift lever is in Reverse position and forward gear engaged when gearshift lever is in Drive position.
- If the gearshift lever indicator does not agree with the transaxle operation in all settings. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the heat shield. Move the gearshift lever to Drive position. Prevent the shift cable from turning and disconnect the selector cable adjusting cap (2). See Figure .
- Move the gearshift lever to Drive position. Adjust the gearshift lever indicator position by loosening the gearshift lever nuts and sliding the whole gearshift lever assembly forwards or backwards, until the reading on the gearshift lever indicator and the position of the selector lever indicator correspond. See Fig 1 .
- Tighten the gearshift lever assembly nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Move the manual selector lever to Drive position. See Fig 2 . Lock the selector cable. Prevent the selector cable from turning. Lock the selector cable adjustment cap. See Figure . Install the heat shield.
NOTE:
The marks line up in Drive position. There is no need to hold gearshift lever after engaging a gear as there is an integral detent mechanism.
