Slipping or flare-up in any gear usually indicates internal transmission element problems. A slipping clutch or band in a particular gear can usually be identified by noting transmission operation in other gear ranges or gearshift lever positions and comparing which internal elements are applied in those ranges or positions. Problem area may be detected by determining which elements are applied. By selecting another gear that does not use these elements, the defective element can be determined.
