Torque Converter DRAINBACK Test

- Drive vehicle for 30-60 minutes to attain normal operating temperature. Check transmission fluid level and add fluid if necessary. Drive vehicle through 8-10 cycles of 1/2 throttle, 1-2 upshifts to raise transmission temperature.
- Park vehicle on level surface and allow vehicle to sit for 30-60 minutes. Check and note fluid level on dipstick with engine off and transmission in Park. Then allow vehicle to sit for a minimum of 24 hours, then check and note fluid level.
- If fluid level on dipstick has risen 1" (25.4 mm) or more above previous reading, excessive converter drainback has occurred. See Fig 1. If excessive torque converter drainback occurs, check the following:
- Stuck open check ball in rear cooler line case fitting.
- Missing check ball in rear cooler line case fitting.
- Incorrect rear cooler line case fitting (without check ball) installed.
