Test G: Coast Clutch Solenoid
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 9 other vehicles, including the 2002 Lincoln Navigator, 2002 Ford Expedition, 2001 Lincoln Navigator, 2001 Ford RV Cutaway, and 2001 Ford Pickup. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
After each service or repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Clear DTCs and repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Ensure all EEC-IV systems are working properly and DTCs are no longer present.
NOTE:
If vehicle is equipped with Power Take-Off (PTO), ensure unit is turned off to perform this test.
- Ensure transmission harness connector is fully seated, terminals are fully engaged in connector and in good condition. Repair as necessary. Connect NGS tester to DLC. Perform KEY-ON-ENGINE-OFF (KOEO) SELF-TEST until continuous memory code(s) have been displayed. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Select OUTPUT TEST MODE (OTM) on NGS tester. Select ALL ON MODE and press START. If vehicle enters OTM, go to next step. If vehicle will not enter OTM, see SCAN TOOL UNABLE TO COMMUNICATE under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Disconnect transmission 12-pin harness connector. Inspect condition of connector. Repair as needed. Using DVOM, connect positive lead to transmission harness connector terminal No. 1, and connect negative lead to terminal No. 5. See Figure. While observing DVOM, press START then STOP on NGS tester to cycle solenoid output. If voltage changes to about battery voltage, go to step 5. If voltage does not change, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector, and inspect it for damaged terminals, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Measure and record resistance between breakout box terminal No. 20 and transmission harness connector terminal No. 5. Measure and record resistance between breakout box terminal No. 71 and 97 and transmission harness connector terminal No. 1. See Figure. If each resistance reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If any resistance reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit(s). Disconnect breakout box. Reconnect all components. Erase all DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Measure and record resistance between breakout box terminal No. 20 and breakout box terminals No. 71 and 97. Measure and record resistance between breakout box terminal No. 20 and breakout box terminals No. 51, 76, 77, 91, 103, and ground. See Figure. If each resistance reading is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If any resistance reading is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short circuit(s). Disconnect breakout box. Reconnect all connectors. Repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Ensure ignition switch is turned to OFF position. Reconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Disconnect transmission 12-pin harness connector. Connect transmission tester to transmission 12-pin harness connector. Perform CCS voltage test. See tester instructions. If CCS activates (LED Green), go to next step. If solenoid does not operate, LED does not light (solenoid shorted to ground or open circuit), or indicates short to battery voltage (LED Red), go to step 7.
- Perform DYNAMIC TESTING - ENGINE ON test. See tester instructions. If CCS activates (LED Green) and engine braking occurs, replace PCM and erase all DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Perform TRANSMISSION DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If condition is still present, diagnose problem by symptom. See appropriate SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLE SHOOTING . If CCS does not activate (no engine braking), go to next step.
- Ensure tester power is off. Set Bench/Drive switch to BENCH MODE. Set Gear Select switch on transmission tester to OHMS CHECK position. Connect ohmmeter to both CCS terminals on tester. If resistance is 20-30 ohms (except Expedition and Navigator) or 17-22 ohms (Expedition and Navigator), go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace solenoid body assembly. Connect all components. Erase all DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Check continuity between transmission tester BAT (-) terminal and both CCS terminals on transmission tester. If continuity exists, replace solenoid body assembly. Connect all components. Erase all DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If continuity does not exist, diagnose problem by symptom. See appropriate SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLE SHOOTING .

The following test should be performed with a digital ohmmeter or low current tester (less than 200 milliamps).
