Shift Solenoid Assemblies

NOTE: Shift solenoids may also be referred to as SSA and SSB.
  1. On/off solenoids (3) are used for electronic shift scheduling. Solenoids used are Shift Solenoid No. 1 (SS1), Shift Solenoid No. 2 (SS2) and Coast Clutch Solenoid (CCS). Solenoids control pressure to 3 shift valves and forward clutch control valve, located in valve body. See SHIFT SOLENOID OPERATION (EXPEDITION & NAVIGATOR) , SHIFT SOLENOID OPERATION (ECONOLINE & F150/250)  and SHIFT SOLENOID OPERATION (EXCURSION & "F"SERIES SUPER-DUTY)  tables.
    SHIFT SOLENOID OPERATION (EXPEDITION & NAVIGATOR)

    Gearshift Lever Position SS1 SS2 CCS
    Park On Off Off
    Reverse On Off Off
    Neutral On Off Off
    "D" (O/D ON)
    1st Gear On Off (1)
    2nd Gear On On (1)
    3rd Gear Off On (1)
    4th Gear Off Off Off
    "D" (O/D OFF)
    1st Gear On Off On
    2nd Gear On On On
    3rd Gear Off On On
    2nd Gear On On On
    1st Gear (2) Off Off On
    1st Gear On Off On
    (1) PCM controlled.
    (2) Transmission is in 2nd gear until vehicle speed drops below calibrated speed.

  2. When shift solenoid is always off, failure could be due to PCM and/or vehicle wiring malfunction, and/or solenoid electrically, hydraulically or mechanically stuck off. For shift symptoms, see Figure and Figure .
