Test B: Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Mercury Villager. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Vehicle must be at room temperature to perform this test.
  1. Disconnect transaxle solenoid harness connector. Measure resistance between terminals No. 6 (component side) and No. 7 (component side) at transaxle solenoid harness connector. If resistance is about 2500 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not about 2500 ohms, replace TFT sensor.
  2. Turn ignition off. Connect transaxle solenoid harness connector. Connect NGS tester to DLC. Start engine. Access TOT PID. Measure voltage of TFT sensor while warming transaxle. Voltage should decrease from 1.5 volts with transaxle fluid at 68°F (20°C) to .5 volt at 186°F (86°C). If voltage is not as specified, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, replace TCM. See TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  3. Start and run engine until warm. Turn ignition off. Disconnect transaxle solenoid harness connector. Measure resistance between terminals No. 6 (Orange wire) and No. 7 (component side) at transaxle solenoid harness connector. If resistance is about 300 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not about 300 ohms, replace TFT sensor. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TCM harness connector C277B. Measure resistance of Light Blue wire between terminal No. 23 at TCM harness connector C277B and terminal No. 7 at transaxle solenoid harness connector. Measure resistance of Orange wire between terminal No. 6 at transaxle harness connector and terminal No. 2 at Output Speed Sensor (OSS) harness connector C164. Resistance should be less than 5 ohms for both circuits. See Figure , Figure and Figure . If resistance measurements are as specified, go to next step. If any resistance measurement is not as specified, repair open in suspect circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  5. Measure resistance of Light Blue wire between terminal No. 23 at TCM harness connector C277B and ground. Resistance should be greater than 10 k/ohms. If resistance as specified, replace TCM. See TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is not as specified, repair Light Blue wire for short to ground.
