Sensor Failure

  1. Connect the EEC-IV 60-Pin Breakout Box to the ABS module with the ABS Adapter Cable.
  2. Disconnect the suspect wheel speed sensor.
  3. Check the harness for a short to ground.
    NOTE: Use the 88 Digital Multimeter with the minimum resistance hold feature enabled for this test.
    1. Monitor the resistance between the EEC-IV 60-Pin Breakout Box pins and ground as follows:
      BREAKOUT BOX PINS RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Sensor Breakout Box Pins Circuits
      Left front wheel speed sensor 12 and 4 521 (TN/OG) and 522 (TN/BK)
      Right front wheel speed sensor 13 and 5 514 (YE/RD) and 516 (YE/BK)
      Rear axle speed sensor 6 and 14 523 (RD/PK) and 519 (LG/BK)
    2. Drive over rough roads at various speeds.
    3. If there is continuity between either circuit and ground, repair the circuit for a short to ground.
  4. Check the harness for an open circuit.
    NOTE: Connect a jumper securely to the suspect sensor connector.
    NOTE: Use the 88 Digital Multimeter with the maximum resistance hold feature enabled for this test.
    1. Connect a jumper between the 2 pins on the suspect sensor connector.
    2. Monitor the resistance between the EEC-IV 60-Pin Breakout Box pins as follows:
      BREAKOUT BOX PINS RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION

      Sensor Breakout Box Pins Circuits
      Left front wheel speed sensor 4 and 12 521 (TN/OG) and 522 (TN/BK)
      Right front wheel speed sensor 5 and 13 514 (YE/RD) and 516 (YE/BK)
      Rear axle speed sensor 6 and 14 523 (RD/PK) and 519 (LG/BK)
    3. Drive over rough roads at various speeds.
    4. If there is an open circuit detected between the pins, repair the circuit(s) for an open circuit.
  5. Check suspect sensor electrical connector.
NOTE: Use the 88 Digital Multimeter with the maximum resistance hold feature enabled for this test.
  1. Monitor the resistance between the suspect wheel speed sensor terminals while wiggling the electrical connector:
    SENSOR RESISTANCE

    Sensor Resistance
    Front 4,000 ohms
    Rear 3,500 ohms
  2. If the resistance is above specifications, install a new wheel speed sensor.
    NOTE: Use the 88 Digital Multimeter with the minimum resistance hold feature enabled for this test.
  3. Monitor the resistance between the suspect wheel speed sensor terminals while wiggling the electrical connector:
    SENSOR RESISTANCE

    Sensor Resistance
    Front 2,000 ohms
    Rear 800 ohms
    NOTE: Use the 88 Digital Multimeter with the minimum resistance hold feature enabled for this test.
  4. If the resistance is below specifications, install a new wheel speed sensor.
  5. Monitor the resistance between the wheel speed sensor terminal and ground on the highest resistance scale of the meter while wiggling the electrical connector.
  6. If the meter shows anything other than an open circuit, install a new wheel speed sensor.
