Test DK: Water In Fuel Indicator Light: Testing
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 10 other vehicles, including the 2002 Ford RV Cutaway, 2002 Ford Pickup, 2002 Ford F550 Super Duty, 2002 Ford F450 Super Duty, and 2002 Ford Excursion. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Proceed to DTC testing steps listed in FAULT CODE SETTING CONDITION table of fault code setting condition.
FAULT CODE SETTING CONDITION
| Fault Code | KOEO | KOER | Continuous Memory |
|---|---|---|---|
| P1139 | DK3 | DK3 |
- 1) KOEO & Continuous Memory DTC P1139: Verify WIFIL Indicator Self-Test
DTC P1139 indicates that instrument cluster has identified a failure of WIFIL indicator. Instrument cluster sends information to PCM to set DTC P1139. Possible causes for this fault are:- Faulty WIFIL Indicator
- Faulty Instrument Cluster
- Faulty PCM
Turn ignition on. WIFIL indicator should illuminate for about 2 seconds then turn off (self-test). If WIFIL operates as specified (performs self-test), clear DTC and retest. If DTC resets, go to TEST W under SYSTEM TESTS in ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - EXCURSION & F250-550 article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If WIFIL does not operate as specified (self-test), go to next step.
- 2) Verify KOEO DTC P1139: Perform KOEO Self-Test
Turn ignition on. Perform KOEO on-demand self-test. If DTC P1139 is present, go to TEST W under SYSTEM TESTS in ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - EXCURSION & F250-550 article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT to diagnose instrument cluster. Restore vehicle, clear DTCs and retest. If DTC P1139 is not present, DTC is intermittent. Restore vehicle. - 3) KOEO & Continuous Memory DTC P1139: Verify WIFIL Indicator Self-Test
DTC P1139 indicates PCM detected a WIF indicator light circuit failure. The following are possible causes for this fault:- Open Or Shorted Wiring Harness Circuit
- Faulty Light Bulb
- Faulty PCM
Turn ignition on and observe WIFIL. If WIFIL illuminates for about 2 seconds then turns off, clear DTCs and retest. If DTC P1139 resets, check for an intermittent open or short to ground in Red wire between PCM and WIFIL. Repair as necessary. If WIFIL does not illuminate for about 2 seconds then turn off, go to next step.
- 4) Check State Of Indicator Light
Turn ignition off. If WIFIL stayed on in step 3) , go to next step. If WIFIL did not stay on in step 3) , go to step 6). - 5) Check WIFIL Circuit For Short To Ground
Disconnect PCM connector. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Turn ignition on. If WIFIL illuminates, repair short to ground in Red wire between PCM and WIFIL. Clear DTCs and retest. If WIFIL does not illuminate, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. - 6) Check Fuse
Check fuse No. 2 (Econoline) or fuse No. 29 (F650-750) at central junction box. On all models, central junction box is located behind lower left side of instrument panel. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is blown, check for short to ground in instrument cluster PWR circuit (Red/Yellow wire) between instrument cluster and central junction box. Replace fuse. Clear DTCs and retest. - 7) Check Power To Instrument Cluster
Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster connectors. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between chassis ground and instrument cluster White 12-pin connector terminal No. 12 (Red/Yellow wire). See Figure or Figure . If voltage is more than 10.5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10.5 volts or less, repair open in Red/Yellow wire between instrument cluster and central junction box. Clear DTCs and retest. - 8) Check WIFIL Circuit For Open
Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Using DVOM, measure resistance of WIFIL circuit between appropriate instrument cluster 12-pin connector terminal No. 12 (Red wire) and test pin No. 28 at breakout box. See Figure or Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Red wire between PCM and instrument cluster. Clear DTCs and retest.

NOTE:
If WIFIL illuminates with only DTC P1140 present, go to TEST DJ, step 1).
