Test DH: Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor: Testing

NOTE: Proceed to DTC testing steps listed in FAULT CODE SETTING CONDITION  table of fault code setting condition.

For Federal emission models Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminates when fault is detected.
    NOTE: For additional testing information, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .

  1. 1) KOEO &/Or Continuous Memory DTC P0236, P1247 Or P1248: Boost Pressure Is Low Or Not Detected
    DTC P0236 indicates faulty turbo boost sensor circuit performance. DTCs P1247 and P1248 indicate turbo boost pressure is low or not detected. The following are possible causes for these faults:
    • Damaged MAP Hose
    • Low Turbo Boost
    • Intake Manifold Or Crossover Leaks
    • Damaged MAP Sensor
    • Damaged PCM

    Inspect MAP sensor hose and manifolds for damage, misrouting or restriction. MAP sensor is mounted to cowl in engine compartment. Replace hose and manifolds as necessary. If hose and manifolds are okay, go to next step.

  2. 2) Check MAP Sensor

    Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), connect PCM to breakout box. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between chassis ground and test pin No. 79 at breakout box. Note voltage reading and compare to specification. See MAP SENSOR SPECIFICATIONS  table. If voltage is within is .5 volt for given altitude (psi), go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, replace MAP sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
  3. 3) MAP Sensor Voltage Check

    Disconnect vacuum hose from MAP sensor. Turn ignition on. Using Pressure Adapter Kit (014-00761), apply 10 psi (69 kPa) of pressure to MAP sensor. Using DVOM, measure voltage between chassis ground and test pin No. 79 at breakout box. If voltage is 2.5-3.1 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 2.5-3.1 volts, replace MAP sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
  4. 4) MAP Sensor Performance Test

    Reconnect vacuum hose to MAP sensor. Disconnect MAP sensor vacuum hose from intake manifold. Install a pressure (boost) gauge to intake manifold so gauge will be visible during a road test. Road test vehicle and accelerate vehicle to achieve full boost. If boost is 12 psi or more, clear DTCs and repeat QUICK TEST . If DTC resets, replace PCM. If boost is less than 12 psi, inspect intake manifolds and crossover tubes for leaks. Check turbo condition. Repair as necessary.

  6. 5) KOEO DTC P0237: Boost Pressure Circuit Low Input
    DTC P0237 indicates low input to turbo boost sensor. The following are possible causes for this fault:
    • MAP Signal Circuit Open Or Shorted To Ground
    • VREF Circuit Open
    • SIG RTN Circuit Open Or Shorted
    • Faulty MAP Sensor
    • Faulty PCM

    Turn ignition off. Perform KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under QUICK TEST. If DTC P0237 is present, go to next step. If DTC P0237 is not present, go to step  12).

  7. 6) Check SIG RTN Circuit For Open

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect MAP sensor connector. MAP sensor is mounted to cowl in engine compartment. Using DVOM, measure resistance between chassis ground and Gray/Red wire at MAP sensor harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Gray/Red wire between PCM and MAP sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
  8. 7) Check VREF Circuit For Open

    Using DVOM, measure voltage between chassis ground and Brown/White wire at MAP sensor harness connector. If voltage is 5 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than 5 volts, repair open in Brown/White wire between PCM and MAP sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
  9. 8) Check MAP Signal Circuit For Open

    Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leave PCM disconnected. Using DVOM, measure resistance between test pin No. 79 at breakout box and Light Green/Black wire at MAP sensor harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Light Green/Black wire between PCM and MAP sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
  10. 9) Check MAP Signal Circuit For Short To SIG RTN Or Chassis Ground

    Using DVOM, measure resistance between test pin No. 79 and test pins No. 25, 51, 76 (Econoline), 77, 91 and 103 at breakout box. If each reading is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If any resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, repair short to SIG RTN circuit or chassis ground in Light Green/Black wire between PCM and MAP sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.
  11. NOTE: For additional testing information, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
    NOTE: Ignore DTC P0237 being set because MAP sensor is disconnected.

  12. 10) KOEO DTC P0238
    DTC P0238 indicates high input in turbo boost sensor circuit. The following are possible causes for this fault:
    • Faulty MAP Sensor
    • Short To Voltage In MAP Signal Circuit
    • Faulty PCM

    Disconnect MAP sensor connector. MAP sensor is mounted to cowl in engine compartment. Turn ignition on. Perform KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under QUICK TEST. If DTC P0238 is present, go to next step. If DTC P0238 is not present, replace MAP sensor. Clear DTCs and retest.

  13. 11) Check MAP Signal Circuit For Short To Voltage

    Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector and inspect for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Repair connector as necessary. Install Rotunda Breakout Box (014-00950), leaving PCM disconnected. Using DVOM, measure resistance between test pin No. 79 and test pins No. 55, 71, 91 and 97 at breakout box. If all resistances are more than 10 k/ohms, replace PCM. Clear DTCs and retest. If any resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, locate and repair short to voltage in Light Green/Black wire. Clear DTCs and retest.
  14. NOTE: For additional testing information, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .

  15. 12) Continuous Memory DTC P0237: Boost Pressure Circuit Low Input
    Continuous Memory DTC P0237 indicates low input to turbo boost sensor during normal driving conditions. The following are possible causes for this fault:
    • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor Signal Circuit Open Or Shorted To Ground
    • Open VREF Circuit
    • Open SIG RTN Circuit
    • Faulty MAP Sensor
    • Faulty PCM

    Turn ignition on. Perform KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under QUICK TEST. If KOEO DTC P0237 is present, go to step  5). If KOEO DTC P0237 is not present, go to next step.

  16. 13) Check For Intermittent Circuit Fault

    Clear Continuous Memory DTCs. Wiggle and bend small sections of wiring harness starting at MAP sensor harness connector and working toward PCM. PCM is located in left rear of engine compartment, near brake master cylinder. Retrieve Continuous Memory DTCs. If DTC P0237 is present, locate and repair intermittent circuit fault in wiring harness. Clear DTCs and retest. If Continuous Memory DTC P0237 is not present, fault cannot be duplicated at this time and testing is complete. Reconnect all components, clear DTCs and retest.

  18. 14) Continuous Memory DTC P0238: Boost Pressure Circuit High Input
    Continuous Memory DTC P0238 indicates high input to turbo boost sensor during normal driving conditions. Possible causes are:
    • Short To Voltage In MAP Signal Circuit
    • Faulty MAP Sensor
    • Faulty PCM

    Perform KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST  under QUICK TEST. If KOEO DTC P0238 is present, go to step  10). If KOEO DTC P0238 is not present, go to next step.

  19. 15) Check For Intermittent Circuit Fault

    Clear Continuous Memory DTCs. Wiggle and bend small sections of wiring harness starting at MAP sensor harness connector and working toward PCM. Retrieve DTCs. If Continuous Memory DTC P0238 is present, locate and repair intermittent circuit fault in wiring harness. Clear DTCs and retest. If Continuous Memory DTC P0238 is not present, fault cannot be duplicated at this time and testing is complete. Reconnect all components, clear DTCs and retest.
