Test D: EPC Solenoid

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 13 other vehicles, including the 2003 Mazda B4000, 2003 Mazda B3000, 2003 Mazda B2300, 2002 Mazda B4000, and 2002 Mazda B3000. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: After each service or repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Clear DTCs and repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Ensure all EEC-V systems are working properly and DTCs are no longer present.
NOTE: All digital TR sensor and VSS DTCs must be repaired before entering Output State Control (OSC) mode.
NOTE: Enter "XXX" and press SEND after each step in which a command was sent to transmission. This will clear any commands sent.
  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Place gearshift lever in "P" position. Ensure transmission harness connector is fully seated, and terminals are fully engaged in connector and in good condition. Connect NGS tester to DLC. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Select DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK on NGS tester. Select PCM. Select ACTIVE COMMAND MODES. Select OUTPUT STATE CONTROL. Select TRANS-BENCH MODE. If vehicle enters TRANS-BENCH MODE, remain in TRANS-BENCH MODE and go to next step. If vehicle does not enter TRANS-BENCH MODE, repeat procedure to enter OSC. If vehicle still does not enter OSC, see SCAN TOOL UNABLE TO COMMUNICATE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Install 300 psi (21.1 kg/cm2 ) pressure gauge to EPC pressure port tap on transmission case. See Figure. With gearshift lever in "P" position, start engine. While monitoring pressure gauge, select a value of 15, 30, 45, 60, 70 or 90 using NGS tester and press SEND. Select a different value between 0 and 90, and press send. If value sent and gauge pressure do not match, go to next step. If value sent and gauge pressure match, clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) .
  3. Turn engine off. Raise and support vehicle. Drain and remove transmission oil pan. Inspect transmission wiring and connectors for damage. Repair as necessary. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect DVOM positive lead to EPC solenoid VPWR terminal. Connect negative lead to chassis ground. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open or short circuit in wiring harness. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  4. Leave DVOM positive lead connected to EPC solenoid VPWR terminal. Connect negative lead to EPC solenoid signal terminal. Select TRANS-BENCH mode. Select EPC PID. While monitoring DVOM, select a value between 0-90 using NGS tester and press SEND. Select another value between 0-90 and press SEND. If voltage and solenoid state change, go to next step. If voltage and solenoid state does not change, check and repair open or short circuit in wiring harness between PCM and EPC solenoid.
  5. Disconnect transmission 16-pin harness connector. Measure resistance between transmission 16-pin harness connector terminals No. 11 and 12. See Figure. If resistance is 3.1-5.7 ohms (2001 models) or 3.7-7.2 ohms (all others), go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace EPC solenoid. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) .
  6. Check for continuity between chassis ground and both EPC solenoid terminals. If continuity exists at either terminal, replace solenoid. If continuity does not exist at either terminal, diagnose shifting concern by symptom. See appropriate symptom in appropriate SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLE SHOOTING .
