Test B: Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 13 other vehicles, including the 2003 Mazda B4000, 2003 Mazda B3000, 2003 Mazda B2300, 2002 Mazda B4000, and 2002 Mazda B3000. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: After each service or repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Clear DTCs and repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Ensure all EEC-V systems are working properly and DTCs are no longer present.
  1. Check transmission harness connector for damaged terminals, corrosion and loose wires. Ensure transmission connector is fully seated. Repair as necessary. Connect NGS tester and turn ignition switch to ON position. Select DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK and press SEND. Select PCM and press SEND. Select PID/DATA MONITOR AND RECORD mode and press SEND. Select and monitor PIDs TFT and TFTV.

    If NGS tester enters PID/DATA MONITOR AND RECORD mode, remain in PID/DATA MONITOR AND RECORD mode and go to next step. If NGS tester does not enter PID/DATA MONITOR AND RECORD mode, repeat procedure to enter PID. If vehicle will still not enter PID, diagnose concern in PCM or NGS tester. See SCAN TOOL UNABLE TO COMMUNICATE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

  2. If transmission is cool, run transmission to normal operating temperature. If transmission is warm, allow transmission to cool. Monitor TFT and TFTV PID values. TFT and TFTV PID values should increase during warm up and decrease during cool down. If TFT or TFTV PIDs do not operate as specified, go to next step. If TFT or TFTV PIDs drop in and out of range, check for an intermittent concern in wiring harnesses, sensor or connector. If TFT or TFTV PIDs operate as specified, clear all DTCs and road test to verify concern still exists. If concern still exists, check wiring harness and connectors. If wiring and connectors are okay, see appropriate symptom in appropriate SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLE SHOOTING .
  3. Remove transmission oil pan. Check transmission wiring harness and connectors for damage or poor connection. Using DVOM, measure voltage between chassis ground and transmission wiring harness connector terminal No. 4. See Figure. If voltage exists, go to next step. If voltage does not exist, check for open or short in transmission harness. If wiring is okay, check for PCM concern. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  4. NOTE: DTC P0712 is set if a short circuit is causing TFT sensor temperature to read more than 315°F (157°C). DTC P0713 is set if an open circuit is causing TFT sensor temperature to read less than -40°F (-40°C).
  5. Disconnect transmission wiring harness connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between transmission connector terminals No. 4 and 8. See Figure. Compare TFT sensor resistance to TFT sensor temperature. See TFT SENSOR RESISTANCE  table. If resistance is not within specification, replace TFT sensor along with internal harness. If resistance is as specified, see appropriate symptom in appropriate SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLE SHOOTING .
