Test A: Engine Does Not Crank Or Relay Clicks

  1. Set parking brake and place transmission in Neutral. Connect a remote starter switch between positive battery terminal on passenger side and starter relay terminal "S" (Red/Light Blue wire terminal). Press remote starter switch. If starter cranks engine, go to step  4. If starter does not crank engine, and starter relay did not close, go to next step. If starter did not crank engine, but starter relay closed, go to step  3.
  2. Measure resistance between starter relay case and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace relay. Check system operation. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, clean starter relay mounting surface and fasteners. Check system operation.
  3. Connect a remote starter switch between positive battery cable on passenger side and starter motor solenoid "S" terminal (Red/Light Blue wire terminal). Press remote starter switch. If starter does not operate, repair or replace starter motor. See STARTER MOTOR . If starter operates, check for open wire between starter relay and starter. Restore electrical connections and check system operation.
  4. Disconnect Digital Transmission Range (DTR) sensor connector. Hold ignition switch in START position. Measure voltage between DTR sensor harness connector terminal No. 12 (Tan/Red wire) and ground. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in power distribution circuit as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Restore electrical connections and check system operation.
  5. Reconnect DTR sensor connector. Hold ignition switch in START position. Using DVOM and backprobing connector measure voltage between DTR sensor harness connector terminal No. 10 (Red/Light Blue wire) and ground. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, repair open Red/Light Blue wire between DTR sensor and starter relay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If voltage is less than 10 volts, ensure DTR sensor is properly adjusted. See DIGITAL TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR  under ADJUSTMENTS. If adjustment is okay, replace DTR sensor. See DIGITAL TRANSMISSION RANGE (TR) SENSOR .
