Test F: Warning Indicator Flickers Or Operates Intermittently

  1. Inspect generator and regulator grounds (mounting surfaces and fasteners). Inspect battery ground. If all grounds are okay, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary and retest system operation.
  2. Start engine. Inspect central junction box fuse No. 14 (5-amp) for looseness. Wiggle fuse connection and note warning indicator. If warning indicator does not flicker, go to next step. If warning indicator flickers, repair loose fuse connection as necessary.
  3. Turn ignition off. Using a fused (15-amp) jumper wire connected to positive battery terminal, backprobe generator harness connector terminal "A" (Orange/Light Blue wire). Start engine and let idle. Observe warning indicator. If warning indicator flickers, go to next step. If warning indicator does not flicker, repair loose connections in Orange/Light Blue wire between generator and Brown fusible link "C". See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  4. Turn ignition off. Check generator 1-pin harness connector for damage, corrosion and looseness (White/Black wire). If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary.
  5. Remove generator from vehicle. Measure resistance between voltage regulator "F" terminal screw on back of generator and generator 3-pin connector terminal "A" (component side). See Figure and Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace generator.
  6. Remove voltage regulator and brush holder. Measure resistance between generator housing and each generator slip ring. See Fig 1. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or more between both slip rings and housing, replace voltage regulator. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms between either slip ring and housing, replace generator.
