Section 599 (Automatic Transmission - 4R100): Removal: Transmission: Removal

ALL VEHICLES
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
- Disconnect the battery. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
- Remove the air cleaner air intake duct assembly. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING .
- Remove the transmission fluid level indicator.
- Remove the engine cover. For additional information, refer to INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION .
- Remove the vapor management valve assembly and position it aside.
- Remove the bolt from the bracket and position it aside.
- Remove the bolt and the fluid filler tube from the short fluid inlet tube, and secure it aside.
- Disconnect the electrical harness connectors.
- Remove the transmission-to-engine retaining bolts
- Remove the rear driveshaft. For additional information, refer to DRIVESHAFT

VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A TRANSMISSION-MOUNTED PARKING BRAKE
- Remove the transmission-mounted parking brake.
- Keep the parking brake vent in the upward position to prevent contamination of the brake shoes and linings.
- Remove the six bolts, parking brake assembly and the gasket from the extension housing.
- Discard the bolts and the gasket. Clean the mating surfaces.

ALL VEHICLES
- Disconnect the transmission range (TR) sensor connector.
- If equipped, remove the heat shield.
- Disconnect the solenoid body connector.
- Disconnect the shift cable at the transmission and position it aside.
- Remove the starter motor. For additional information, refer to STARTERS - EXCEPT DIESEL or STARTERS - DIESEL .
- Remove the cylinder block opening cover.
- Remove and discard the torque converter-to-flexplate retaining nuts.
- Remove the flexplate inspection cover.
- Remove the bolts.
- Remove the flexplate inspection cover.
- Install a suitable high-lift transmission jack.
- Remove the rear transmission mount nuts.
- Remove the heat shields, if equipped.
- Remove the transmission support crossmember.
- Disconnect the fluid cooler tubes at the cooler bypass valve (CBV). Plug all fittings and position the tubes aside.
- Remove the transmission-to-engine bolts.
- Leaving the transmission in a horizontal position, slide it back far enough to install the special tool.
- Install the special tool.
- Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
- Move the transmission extension housing with a slight side-to-side motion to separate the transmission from the engine and the torque converter from the flexplate.
- Once the transmission has been removed the transmission the fluid coolers, cooler tubes and the cooler bypass valve will need to be cleaned. Carry out the transmission fluid cooler-backflushing and cleaning. For additional information, refer to TRANSMISSION FLUID COOLER - BACKFLUSHING AND CLEANING .
NOTE:
This vehicle has adaptive shift strategies. Whenever the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms will occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The customer needs to be notified that they may experience slightly different upshifts (either soft or firm) and that this is a temporary condition that will eventually return to normal operating condition.
NOTE:
As the bolts are removed, note the length of each bolt for correct location during installation.
CAUTION:
Be sure not to raise the back of the transmission too high. If it makes contact with the underbody, damage to the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor can occur.
WARNING:
The torque converter is heavy and can result in injury if it falls out of the transmission. Secure the torque converter in the transmission.
CAUTION:
Use care while removing the transmission to avoid damage to the TSS sensor.
CAUTION:
Do not use the cooler bypass valve (CBV) as a handle. Damage to the cooler bypass valve assembly can occur or damage to the case can result.
CAUTION:
Use a safety strap to hold the transmission to the high-lift transmission jack. Place the strap behind the CBV to prevent damage to the cooler bypass valve.
