Test B: Unusual Starter Noise

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mercury Villager. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Ensure starter mounting bolts are tight and installed properly. Repair as necessary. If starter is mounted correctly, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to off position. Connect remote starter switch between starter solenoid terminals "B" (battery cable) and "S" (Red/White wire). See Figure. Ensure transmission is in Park or Neutral and ignition is off. Engage starter motor and verify noise is from starter. If noise is from starter, go to next step. If noise is not from starter, check for engine mechanical concerns. See appropriate article in ENGINES.
  3. Remove starter motor. See STARTER MOTOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect flywheel ring gear for wear or damage. Inspect starter drive gear for wear or damage. Replace ring gear, starter or both as necessary. If no wear or damage is found, replace starter motor and check system operation.
