Removal and Installation

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
2. Remove the rear halfshafts. For additional information, refer to REAR AXLE HALFSHAFTS, BEARINGS AND SEALS .
3. Index-mark the driveshaft flange to the rear axle pinion flange.

4. Remove the four rear axle flange bolts.

   CAUTION: The driveshaft flange fits tightly on the rear axle pinion flange pilot. Never hammer on the driveshaft or any of its components to disconnect the driveshaft flange from the pinion flange. Pry only in the area shown, with a suitable tool, to disconnect the driveshaft flange from the pinion flange.

   Using a suitable tool as shown, disconnect the driveshaft flange from the rear axle pinion flange and position aside using mechanics wire to support.

5. Position a suitable hydraulic jack to the axle housing. Securely strap the jack to the housing.
6. Remove the parts in the order indicated in the following illustration and table.

7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

8. Fill the axle with the specified quantity of the specified lubricant. For additional information, refer to the SPECIFICATIONS .

Item 5: Pinion Nose Isolator Bushing Removal Note 

1. Using the special tools, remove and discard the bushing.

Item 6: Rear Axle Assembly Isolator Bushing Removal Note 

1. Using the special tool, draw the isolator from the frame pocket.

Item 6: Rear Axle Assembly Isolator Bushing Installation Note 

1. Using the special tool, draw the isolator into the frame pocket.
   • There is no orientation requirement for the frame mounted isolators.

Item 5: Pinion Nose Isolator Bushing Installation Note 

1. Insert the rear axle differential pinion nose isolator bushing and make sure the notches are aligned forward and aft.

2. Using the special tool, install the rear axle differential pinion nose isolator bushing.
