Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer and 2004 Ford Explorer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the valve covers. For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER LH  and VALVE COVER RH .
  2. Remove the cooling fan. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
  3. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the bolts and ignition coils.

  4. NOTE: Remove any foreign material from the spark plug wells with compressed air before removing the spark plugs.
  5. Remove the spark plugs.
  6. Remove the parts in the order indicated in the following illustration and table.

    To remove individual parts, only carry out the listed steps:

    Part Steps
    Camshaft roller followers 1
    Hydraulic lash adjusters 1-2

  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  8. Install the spark plugs.
    • Tighten to 18 Nm (13 lb-ft).
  9. Install the cooling fan. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
  10. NOTE: Apply dielectric compound to the inside of the coil boots.

  11. Install the LH and RH ignition coils and electrical connectors.
  12. Install the valve covers. For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER LH  and VALVE COVER RH .
