Pinpoint Test H: DTC C1279, C1280, C1281, C1282, C2769, C2770 -Sensor Cluster Fault

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer and 2004 Ford Explorer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Use the flex probe kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multimeter probes.
NOTE: The yaw rate sensor, lateral accelerometer, and longitudinal accelerometer (4WD) are integral to the sensor cluster.
NOTE: Make sure the vehicle is not on a hoist and is sitting on level ground before performing stability assist module calibration.
NOTE: The vehicle must be on level ground, not on a hoist and at a complete standstill. Any vehicle movement will result in false values for this test.
  1. H1 CARRY OUT THE RECALIBRATION PROCEDURE 
    • Connect the diagnostic tool.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Clear the DTCs.
    • Carry out the accelerometer recalibration procedure using the diagnostic tool.
    • Retrieve the DTCs.
    • Are any DTCs retrieved or does the recalibration procedure indicate a fault? 

    Yes 

    GO to H2.

    No 

    The ABS system is operating correctly. Condition may have been caused by an incomplete or inaccurate calibration.

  2. H2 CHECK THE ABS MODULE YAW RATE PID 
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: ABS Module PID.
    • Monitor the ABS module yaw rate PID.
    • Is the ABS module yaw rate PID value between -0.05 and 0.05? 

    Yes 

    GO to H3.

    No 

    CHECK the mounting of the sensor cluster. If ok, INSTALL a new sensor cluster. REFER to ACCELEROMETER . CLEAR the DTCs. RECALIBRATE the ABS module. FOLLOW the diagnostic tool directions for the calibration procedure. REPEAT the self-test.

  3. H3 CHECK THE ABS MODULE LATERAL ACCELERATION PID 
    NOTE: The vehicle must be on level ground and at a complete standstill. Any vehicle movement will result in false values for this test.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: ABS Module PID.
    • Monitor the ABS module lateral acceleration PID.
    • Is the ABS module lateral acceleration PID value between -7 and 7? 

    Yes 

    If equipped with 4WD, GO to H4.

    If equipped with 2WD, GO to  H5.

    No 

    CHECK the mounting of the sensor cluster. If ok, INSTALL a new sensor cluster. REFER to ACCELEROMETER . CLEAR DTCs. RECALIBRATE the ABS module. FOLLOW the diagnostic tool directions for the calibration procedure. REPEAT the self-test.

  4. H4 CHECK THE ABS MODULE LONGITUDINAL ACCELERATION PID 
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: ABS Module PID.
    • Monitor the ABS module longitudinal acceleration PID.
    • Is the ABS module longitudinal acceleration PID value between -4 and 4? 

    Yes 

    GO to H5.

    No 

    CHECK the mounting of the sensor cluster. If ok, INSTALL a new sensor cluster. REFER to ACCELEROMETER . CLEAR DTCs. RECALIBRATE the ABS module. FOLLOW the diagnostic tool directions for the calibration procedure. REPEAT the self-test.

  5. H5 CHECK THE ACCELEROMETER CIRCUITRY FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Sensor Cluster C3179.
    • Disconnect: ABS Module C155.
    • Measure the resistance between the ABS module connector, harness side and the accelerometer connector, harness side as follows:
      CIRCUIT SPECIFICATION

      ABS Module Connector-Pin Accelerometer Connector-Pin Circuit
      C155-7 C3179-3 or C3180-3 1574 (DB)
      C155-5 C3179-5 or C3180-5 1575 (BK/WH)
      C155-25 C3179-1 or C3180-1 3125 (RD/YE)
      C155-29 C3179-2 or C3180-2 3126 (TN/YE)

    • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 

    Yes 

    GO to H6.

    No 

    REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. CLEAR the DTCs. RECALIBRATE the ABS module. FOLLOW the diagnostic tool directions for the calibration procedure. REPEAT the self-test.

  6. H6 CHECK THE ACCELEROMETER CIRCUITRY FOR A SHORT TO POWER 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the accelerometer connector, harness side and ground as follows:
      CIRCUIT SPECIFICATION

      Accelerometer Connector-Pin Circuit
      C3179-3 or C3180-3 1574 (DB)
      C3179-5 or C3180-5 1575 (BK/WH)
      C3179-1 or C3180-1 3125 (RD/YE)
      C3179-2 or C3180-2 3126 (TN/YE)

    • Is any voltage present? 

    Yes 

    REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. CLEAR the DTCs. RECALIBRATE the ABS module. FOLLOW the diagnostic tool directions for the calibration procedure. REPEAT the self-test.

    No 

    GO to H7.

  7. H7 CHECK THE ACCELEROMETER CIRCUITRY FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Measure the resistance between the accelerometer connector, harness side and ground as follows:
      CIRCUIT SPECIFICATION

      Accelerometer Connector-Pin Circuit
      C3179-3 or C3180-3 1574 (DB)
      C3179-5 or C3180-5 1575 (BK/WH)
      C3179-1 or C3180-1 3125 (RD/YE)
      C3179-2 or C3180-2 3126 (TN/YE)

    • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 

    Yes 

    GO to H8.

    No 

    REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. CLEAR the DTCs. RECALIBRATE the ABS module. FOLLOW the diagnostic tool directions for the calibration procedure. REPEAT the self-test.

  8. H8 CHECK THE VOLTAGE FROM THE ABS MODULE 
    • Connect: ABS Module C155.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between the accelerometer C3179-3 or C3180-3, circuit 1574 (DB), harness side and the accelerometer C3179-5 or C3180-5, circuit 1575 (BK/WH), harness side.

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 

    Yes 

    INSTALL a new sensor cluster. REFER to ACCELEROMETER . CLEAR DTCs. RECALIBRATE the ABS module. FOLLOW the diagnostic tool directions for the calibration procedure. REPEAT the self-test.

    No 

    GO to H9.

  9. H9 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all ABS connectors.
    • Check for:
      • corrosion
      • pushed-out pins
    • Connect all ABS connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 

    Yes 

    INSTALL a new ABS module. refer to ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE . TEST the system for normal operation.

    No 

    The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
