Wheel Cylinder: Disassembly

NOTE: For wheel cylinder component identification, refer to illustration. See Figure .
  1. Disengage the dust boots from the grooves in the wheel cylinder housing and remove each dust boot and piston from the wheel cylinder housing.
  2. Remove the cups and wheel cylinder piston cup spring from the rear wheel cylinder bore.
  3. Remove the wheel cylinder bleeder screw from the back of the wheel cylinder housing.
  4. Discard all rubber parts and wash all of the remaining parts in clean, denatured alcohol.
  5. Inspect the pistons for scratches, scoring or other visible damage. Replace the pistons as necessary.
  6. Inspect the rear wheel cylinder bore for scratches, scoring or other visible damage. If necessary, hone the rear wheel cylinder bore. Do not hone more than 0.003" (0.08 mm) beyond the rear wheel cylinder's original diameter. Wash the wheel cylinder housing with clean, denatured alcohol after honing.
  7. Inspect the wheel cylinder bleeder screw hole to ensure that it is free of obstructions and clean as necessary.
