Section 54 (Disc Brakes & Drum Brakes): Overhaul: Caliper: Disassembly

- Remove the front disc brake caliper.
- Open the bleeder screw and drain any remaining brake fluid from the front disc brake caliper.
- Remove the front disc brake pads. Fig 1 .
- Remove the front disc brake caliper rubber insulators.
- Position shop towels between the front disc brake caliper and the front disc brake caliper piston.
- Apply low air pressure through the brake hose fitting to remove the front disc brake caliper piston.
- Remove the piston seal and dust seal. Remove and discard the dust seal. Use a suitable tool to remove the piston seal from the front disc brake caliper piston bore and discard.
WARNING:
Do not use an excessive amount of air pressure to remove the caliper piston. Excessive pressure can force the caliper piston out of the front disc brake caliper bore with enough force to cause personal injury. Never attempt to catch the caliper piston by hand as it comes out of the front disc brake caliper bore.
CAUTION:
Use a plastic or wooden pick to remove the piston seal. Do not use a metal tool. A metal tool can scratch or nick the piston seal groove and result in a possible piston seal leak.
