Brake Pedal Free Play

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mercury Villager. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

With engine off, depress brake pedal several times to eliminate vacuum in power booster. Depress brake pedal until resistance is felt and measure amount of free play. See Fig 1 . Brake pedal free play should be 0.039-0.118" (1.0-3.0 mm). If free play is not within specification, loosen brake pedal push rod lock nut and turn push rod until free play is correct. Ensure brake pedal height is within specifications and stoplights operate properly.
