Yes
GO to F2.
No
CARRY OUT the checks. ERASE the codes. RERUN the On-Board Diagnostic Tests.
- F2 CHECK THE CONTINUITY OF THE TSS HARNESS CIRCUITS CAUTION: Do not pry on the connector. This will damage the connector and could result in a transaxle concern. Depress the tab on the TSS connector.
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: TSS.
- Disconnect: PCM.
- Inspect for damaged or pushed out pins, corrosion or loose wires.
- Install the EEC-V Control System Breakout Box.
- Measure the resistance between the PCM signal test pin 6 at the EEC-V Control System Breakout Box and pin 1 TSS(+) signal circuit at the TSS harness connector.
- Measure the resistance between the PCM signal test pin 91 at the EEC-V Control System Breakout Box and pin 2 TSS(-) signal circuit at the TSS harness connector.
- Is each resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes
GO to F3.
No
REPAIR the open circuit(s). REMOVE the EEC-V Control System Breakout Box. RECONNECT all of the components. ERASE the codes. RERUN the On-Board Diagnostic Tests.
- F3 CHECK THE TSS CIRCUITS FOR SHORT TO POWER AND GROUND
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: PCM.
- Disconnect: TSS.
- Install the EEC-V Control System Breakout Box.
- Measure the resistance between the PCM test pin 6 and test pin 71 at the EEC-V Control System Breakout Box.
- Measure the resistance between the PCM test pins 6 and test pins 24, 25, 51, 76, 77, 91 and 103 at the EEC-V Control System Breakout Box and chassis ground.
- Is each resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes
GO to F4.
No
REPAIR the short circuit(s). REMOVE the EEC-V Control System Breakout Box. CONNECT all of the components. ERASE the codes and RERUN the On-Board Diagnostic Tests.
- F4 TRANSMISSION FUNCTIONAL TEST
- Connect: TSS Sensor.
- Install the EEC-V Control System Breakout Box.
- Measure the voltage between pin 6 (TSS+) and pin 91 (TSS-) at the EEC-V Control System Breakout Box. Set the voltmeter to the AC scale.
- Monitor the voltmeter while driving the vehicle.
- Does the voltage increase with an increase in vehicle speed?
Yes
INSTALL a new powertrain control module (PCM).
No
GO to F5.
- F5 CHECK THE RESISTANCE OF THE TSS SENSOR
- Install the EEC-V Control System Breakout Box.
- Measure the resistance between pin 6 (TSS+) and pin 91 (TSS-) at the EEC-V Control System Breakout Box.
- Record the resistance. The resistance is temperature dependent. Refer to the following chart.TSS TEMPERATURE/RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS
Sensor temperature Ohms reading -40°C (-40°F) 223-287 ohms 20°C(68°F) 310-390 ohms 150°C(302°F) 442-566 ohms - Is the resistance within specification according to the chart?
Yes
GO to F6.
No
INSTALL a new TSS sensor. Refer to TURBINE SHAFT SPEED (TSS) SENSOR . RERUN the TSS Function Test.
- F6 CHECK THE SENSOR FOR SHORT TO GROUND
- Disconnect: TSS.
- Measure the resistance between +TSS and ground and -TSS and ground. (less than 200 milliamps).
- Connection should show infinite resistance (no continuity).
- Does the connection show continuity?
Yes
INSTALL a new TSS sensor. Refer to TURBINE SHAFT SPEED (TSS) SENSOR .
No
GO to F7.
- F7 CHECK THE TSS MAGNETISM
- Remove the TSS sensor. Refer to TURBINE SHAFT SPEED (TSS) SENSOR .
- Place the TSS sensor against a metal surface to which a magnet would stick. The TSS sensor should be magnetized and stick to the metal surface.
- Does the TSS sensor stick?
Yes
GO to F8.
No
INSTALL a new TSS sensor. Refer to TURBINE SHAFT SPEED (TSS) SENSOR . RERUN the TSS Function Test.
- F8 CHECK THE DRIVEN SPROCKET AND EXCITER WHEEL
- Remove the TSS sensor. Refer to TURBINE SHAFT SPEED (TSS)
- Select NEUTRAL.
- Rotate the engine and observe through the TSS sensor hole in the chain cover that all four tabs in the exciter wheel are present and free of foreign material.
- Measure the depth of the exciter wheel tooth from the outer edge of the chain cover. The distance should be within specification: 18.65-16.92 mm (0.73-0.67 inch). Mark the tooth with a marker and repeat the measurements for the other teeth.
- Are the tabs present and free of foreign material and is depth within specification?
Yes
INSTALL a new TSS sensor. RFFFR to TURBINE SHAFT SPEED (TSS) . RERUN the TSS Function Test.
No
Refer to TRANSAXLE to repair the output shaft ring gear. REPAIR or INSTALL new as required.
