Pinpoint Test A: The Wipers Are Inoperative

  1. A1 RETRIEVE THE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCs) 
    • Retrieve and document continuous DTCs.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: Clear Continuous DTCs.
    • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: SJB Wiper/Washer Self-Test.
    • Are DTCs recorded? 
    • Yes  : If DTC B1431 only, GO to A2.

      If DTC B1432 only, GO to  A4.

      If DTC B1431, B1434, B1458 and B1840, VERIFY the smart junction box fuse 5 (30A) is OK. If OK, GO to  A5.

    • No  : GO to  A6.
  2. A2 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE WIPER RUN/PARK RELAY 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Wiper Run/Park Relay.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between ground and wiper run/park relay pin 1, circuit 1671 (RD).

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    • Yes  : CARRY OUT the run/park relay component test. Refer to the appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS for component testing. If the relay tests OK, GO to A3.
    • No  : REPAIR circuit 1671 (RD) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
  3. A3 CHECK CIRCUIT 646 (YE/WH) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: C2280a.
    • Measure the resistance between SJB C2280a-17, circuit 646 (YE/WH) and wiper run/park relay pin 2, circuit 646 (YE/WH).

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    • Yes  : GO to  A11.
    • No  : REPAIR circuit 646 (YE/WH) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. A4 CHECK CIRCUIT 646 (YE/WH) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Wiper Run/Park Relay.
    • Disconnect: SJB C2280a.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between ground and wiper run/park relay pin 2, circuit 646 (YE/WH).

    • Is voltage present? 
    • Yes  : REPAIR circuit 646 (YE/WH) for a short to voltage. TEST the system for normal operation.
    • No  : GO to  A11.
  5. A5 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE RELAY COILS 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Wiper Run/Park Relay.
    • Disconnect: Wiper High/Low Relay.
    • Disconnect: Washer Relay.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between ground and:
      • Wiper run/park relay pin 1, circuit 1671 (RD).
      • Wiper high/low relay pin 1, circuit 1671 (RD).

    • Measure the voltage between ground and:
      • Washer relay pin 2, circuit 1671 (RD).

    • Are the voltages greater than 10 volts? 
    • Yes  : GO to  A11.
    • No  : REPAIR circuit 1671 (RD) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
  6. A6 CHECK THE GROUND TO THE WIPER MOTOR 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Wiper Motor C125.
    • Measure the resistance between ground and wiper motor C125-3, circuit 57 (BK).

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    • Yes  : GO to A7.
    • No  : REPAIR circuit 57 (BK) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
  7. A7 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE WIPER MOTOR 
    • Key in ON position.
    • Place the wipers in LOW.
    • Measure the voltage between ground and wiper motor C125-2, circuit 58 (WH).

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    • Yes  : INSTALL a new wiper motor. REFER to MOTOR - WINDSHIELD WIPER . TEST the system for normal operation.
    • No  : GO to A8.
  8. A8 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE WIPER RUN/PARK RELAY SWITCH 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Wiper Run/Park Relay.
    • Key in ON position.
    • Measure the voltage between ground and wiper run/park relay pin 5, circuit 1671 (RD).

    • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
    • Yes  : CARRY OUT the run/park and high/low relay component tests. Refer to the appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS for component testing. If the relays test OK, GO to A9.
    • No  : REPAIR circuit 1671 (RD) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
  9. A9 CHECK CIRCUIT 28 (BK/PK) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Wiper High/Low Relay.
    • Measure the resistance between wiper run/park relay pin 3, circuit 28 (BK/PK) and wiper high/low relay pin 3, circuit 28 (BK/PK).

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    • Yes  : GO to A10.
    • No  : REPAIR circuit 28 (BK/PK) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
  10. A10 CHECK CIRCUIT 57 (BK) FOR AN OPEN 
    • Key in OFF position.
    • Disconnect: Multi-function Switch C202a.
    • Measure the resistance between ground and multi-function switch C202a-6, circuit 57 (BK).

    • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
    • Yes  : CARRY OUT the multi-function switch component test. Refer to the appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS for component testing. If the switch tests OK, GO to A11.
    • No  : REPAIR circuit 57 (BK) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
  11. A11 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION 
    • Disconnect all SJB connectors.
    • Check for:
      • Corrosion.
      • Pushed-out pins.
    • Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
    • Yes  : INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULES .

      CLEAR the DTCs, REPEAT the self-test.

    • No  : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
