Pinpoint Test R: The Reversing Lamps Are Inoperative
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Ford Ranger. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- R1 CHECK THE STOPLAMP OPERATION
- Press and release the brake pedal while observing the rear lamps.
- Do the stoplamps operate correctly?
- Yes : GO to R2.
- No : REFER to STOPLAMPS .
- R2 CHECK CIRCUIT 298 (VT/OG) FOR VOLTAGE
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Digital Transmission Range (TR) Sensor (Automatic Transmission) C167.
- Disconnect: Reversing Lamp Switch (Manual Transmission) C169.
- Key in ON position.
- Measure the voltage between the digital TR sensor C167 pin 9, circuit 298 (VT/OG) (A/T), harness side and ground; or between the reversing lamp switch C169 pin 2, circuit 298 (VT/OG) (M/T), harness side and ground.
- Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?
- Yes : GO to R4.
- No : GO to R3.
- R3 CHECK THE SMART JUNCTION BOX (SJB) FOR AN OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: SJB C2280b.
- Measure the resistance between the SJB C2280b pin 7, circuit 298 (VT/OG), component side and the SJB C2280b pin 17, circuit 687 (GY/YE), component side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- Yes : REPAIR circuit 298 (VT/OG). TEST the system for normal operation.
- No : GO to R5.
- R4 CHECK CIRCUIT 140 (BK/PK) FOR AN OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- Measure the resistance between the digital TR sensor C167 pin 11, circuit 140 (BK/PK) (A/T), harness side and ground; or between the reversing lamp switch C169 pin 1, circuit 140 (BK/PK) (M/T), harness side and ground.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- Yes : INSTALL a new digital TR sensor or reversing lamp switch. REFER to TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS or MANUAL TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION accordingly. TEST the system for normal operation.
- No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- R5 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect all SJB connectors.
- Check for:
- Corrosion
- Pushed-out pins
- Connect all SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- Yes : INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULES . TEST the system for normal operation.
- No : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
