Pinpoint Test T: The Air Bag Warning Indicator Is Never/Always On

- T1 CHECK THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR LAMP OPERATION
- Key in ON position.
- Observe the air bag warning indicator lamp prove out.
- Does the air bag lamp prove out correctly?
- Yes : System is operating correctly at this time.
- No : GO to T2.
- T2 RETRIEVE THE RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE (RCM) RECORDED DTCS FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON DEMAND SELF-TESTS
- Use the recorded RCM DTCs from the continuous and on demand self-test.
- Are DTCs present?
- Yes : REFER to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS to continue diagnosis of the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
- No : If the airbag warning indicator never on, GO to T3 If the airbag warning indicator always on, GO to T6.
- T3 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS NOTE: When the instrument cluster is removed, check for correct installation of the warning indicators.
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220a, C220b.
- Connect: Instrument Cluster C220a, C220b.
- Key in ON position.
- Observe the air bag warning indicator.
- Does the air bag warning indicator prove-out correctly?
- Yes : System is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
- No : GO to T4.
- T4 ISOLATE THE AIR BAG DIAGNOSTIC MODULE
- Key in OFF position.
- Deactivate the restraint control supplemental air bag system. REFER to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .
- Disconnect: Restraint Control Module (RCM) C2041.
- Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the RCM C2041 pin 20, circuit 608 (BK/YE) harness side and ground.
- Key in ON position.
- Observe the air bag warning indicator.
- Does the air bag warning indicator illuminate?
NOTE: If the fuse fails, repair the circuit for a short to power.- Yes : Remove the jumper wire, GO to T8.
- No : Remove the jumper wire, GO to T5.
- T5 CHECK CIRCUIT 608 (BK/YE) FOR AN OPEN
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220b.
- Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220b pin 13, circuit 608 (BK/YE) harness side and the RCM C2041 pin 20, circuit 608 (BK/YE) harness side.
- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
- Yes : GO to T9.
- No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- T6 CHECK CIRCUIT 608 (BK/YE)
- Deactivate the restraint control supplemental air bag system. REFER to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: RCM C2041.
- Key in ON position.
- Monitor the air bag warning indicator lamp.
- Does the air bag warning indicator lamp continue to illuminate?
NOTE: Make sure the shorting bar is not engaged between pins 20 and 21 on the RCM connector when monitoring the air bag warning indicator.- Yes : GO to T7.
- No : GO to T8.
- T7 CHECK CIRCUIT 608 (BK/YE) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Key in OFF position.
- Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220b.
- Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220b pin 13, circuit 608 (BK/YE) harness side and ground.
- Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
NOTE: Make sure the shorting bar is not engaged between pins 20 and 21 on the RCM connector when carrying out this test.- Yes : GO to T9.
- No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- T8 CHECK FOR CORRECT RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE (RCM) OPERATION
- Disconnect the RCM connector.
- Check for:
- Corrosion
- Pushed-out pins
- Connect the RCM connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- Yes : INSTALL a new RCM. REFER to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
- No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- T9 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
- Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
- Check for:
- Corrosion
- Pushed-out pins
- Incorrectly installed bulb sockets
- Burnt-out bulbs
- Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
- Yes : INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
- No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
